Hi there

Can the RED CHARGER charge 2 batteries at once or will it only charge one at a time?

Thanks
Rory

To my knowledge, it's a sequential charger. It charges one, then the other.

Edit: yeah, it's sequential.

From the on-line ordering guide / price list -

RED CHARGER

Includes –

Dual sequential Battery Charger
Integrated 100W D.C power output.
Camera-Charger cable – 10ft

Hey Brook

Do you know how long it takes to charge the battery?

Rory

No idea. That's a question better suited for a member of the RED team.

brook is right.. one battery at a time, it automatically moves to the 2nd after 1st is charged. During the whole charging cycle, you can use the charger to power the camera directly as well.

it charges the Red batteries in just over 2 hours a piece.

Thanks, Jarred. One question for you:

During the whole charging cycle, you can use the charger to power the camera directly as well.

Q : Can it charge a battery at the same time as powering the camera - A : No, the camera takes precedence over charging the battery. But if the camera is powered down or the power input disconnected, the charger can sense that and re-commence charging the battery.

Has the charger been updated to allow charging and camera power simultaneously, or am I reading something wrong?

sorry i was sort of half clear. It cant do anything simultaneously.. it can only go from battery to battery to AUX.. but it switches all automatically.

There are 3 lights on the charge besides each port.. it will indicate which is doing what. Blinking Green means its on standby, orange means charging, etc., and as stuart mentions when you goto the AUX port, it will overide everything else... and which every battery got interupted will go back to charging as soon as the AUX is disconnected.

so while you are charging your batteries, you can just plug in the camera without having to remove any of the batteries or change any switches. as soon as you turn the camera off, your batteries keep charging.

oh.. and to add.. while the batteries are charging, there is a progress meter in 20% increments on the batteries to show you state of charge. That meter becomes the battery level indicator when its on the camera.

Awesome, thanks.

Are there any 3rd party chargers that will do simultaneous charging?

IDX do offer a 4 battery simultaneous charger, but it doesn't have a built in 100W D.C power output, and is significantly more expensive than the RED CHARGER.

Forgive me if it has been already said. How much rec. time on a full charge?

Oaky Let me ask this way. Takes about two hours to charge a battery right? So how much record time do you get on a fully charged battery about? I ask cause I want to know if more then two battery's are needed for nonstop recording? Thank you.

I think like any camera I've worked with...one being used, one being charged and one standing by ready to be used is great. You can never have enough batteries really.

Our steadicam can get by on 3 but it's a pain to manage. We now have 5 and one barely gets used, so 4 is a nice number for me (but I still ordered 5!) :)

It would seem like 2 RED Power Packs is the way to go so you have 2 charging at once with one on the camera and one as backup.

Thank you for response guys :) I was hoping to get by with the one power pack . Trying to keep my budget down.

thinking of red made this 4k camera with more size like sony hdcf950 or something like that then it will more comfortable for cinematographer like us. and surely it can beat sony's new f 23 too but unfortunatly this one is a prototype system. hope the red team devolap or change its shape and size (more... size)

Do you mean like the Dalsa:biggrin:

This may be a little off topic:

How many charge cycles are the batteries good for before their capacity shrinks significantly?

I think buying a non-red simultanious quad charger will be the best budget choice compared with buying 2 red chargers.

If you intend to do that, it would be best to find someone who has one of those models and get their feedback. What can happen is that there is the same charge current capacity, its just split between four batteries rather than two, so the recharge time per battery can go up by two also.
