european rental companies should take attention. There were several break-ins in the last time. Those guys have stolen cameras in Hamburg in our office, they were at Arri in Cologne and also at Cinecam in Paris. I think the total value of all stolen equipment is nearly 2 Mio EUR now. We know that these guys also have visited several rental houses in Germany - so please take care.

Are these the guys that stole all the lenses in France? They hit Panavision, got something like 6 sets of speeds, and six sets of standards, as well as a ton of other crap.

Yes these guys probably hit Panavision and Arri, they tried at Cinegate - but weren´t succesful. We saw them in our offices in Cologne and Hamburg.

yes, that's the guys. They stole camera too. I've heard that only at Panavision Cinecam, it was a 1.5 millions € thief.
I hate thieves.

I print this right now and forward to my fellow in the rental business.

Fucking bastards, they should be simply hanged as thieves deserve. Don't tell me they are stealing items worth millions just for food.

Just heard of someone in Denmark who lost 6 Master Primes and wireless and regular follow focus to some scammers with false identities who never returned the gear. Beware everyone. At least make sure you make copied of all identification papers and take photos of any renter you don't know and trust. It's sad it has to be this way.

They hit Swizerland as well. Rented equipment from three different rental houses and never returnded it. Some HD cameras and lenses, a full set of S4s and a Red camera.

I'm a small kiosk rental and postproduction service that had a lot of problems with renting my gear in Vienna, also around here in middle Europe and Balkans.

Now I stopped because there is no any serious security even if you go with it as a DIT.

My renting service is soon over after I upgrade web page.

There is a 'inbetween' solution to this Sanjin - just rent to people and businesses you know personally. I would never rent edit equipment to people I didn't know or have extensive references on. This is how hire used to work. Now with so much competition, people have forgotten or feel they can't afford to be sensible.

Suggestion seems reasonable and practical.

Sanjin are you saying that even accompanying equipment as a DIT, there is a likely circumstance that you would or could be jumped on location?

I've heard it's happened a few times here in London - Not always with the Red, but more often because it's such a recognisable and well used camera - once at knife point.

There were 2 break ins in Belgian OB companies, which lost about 35 HD cameras in 2 nights.

People were even working over there while it was happening.

I stopped rentals for many reasons and only doing a special projects...because I'm a small kiosk and mostly all the equipment is for my art projects...sorry...

The Red stolen in Switzerland was rented with a valid looking ID, Business Cards and even a Homepage of the Production existed. Turned out it was all set up. The Company lost PDW-900 Camera along with the Red.

Luckily the benefits of being a bigger rental house is all the insurance they have, they should be able to recoup, the loss of business until they get new equipment is gonna be miserable though. For the home owner and renter, I've seen tons of people send their stuff out with no contract, no insurance. Isn't Epic supposed to have a GPS function for VFX work? Maybe one day RED HEADQUARTERS could turn it on remotely if it's stolen and find the culprits...

Interesting - that website now has a warning that someone calling himself Andy Walters has been using their name to steal gear - it looks like the fraudsters may have just falsely used Alltogether's name and website to front their fraud??

That's a bit worrying if fraudsters start using legit businesses to perpetrate their crime!

I find it incredible that such an old camera would still be in a rental companies inventory.
I was the first person to use that camera a very long time ago!

Sounds like a serious epidemic hitting our colleagues in Europe. And I thought I had it bad losing two Canon DSLR's to fraudsters last month out here in California.

Hi Stephen,

Gemany is moving slow towards HDTV, Digibeta is still a widely accepted delivery format for Television :(

I think the last time i touched a Digibeta Camera was in 2004 or 2005.
