Robert Goodman has written the definitive guide for VariCam and other cameras in an easy to use format that is essential reading for VariCam shooters. http://www.goodmansguide.com/
I suggest that Red employ Mr. Goodman to prepare a guidebook for the Red; if moved forward now, the guide could actually be delivered with the Camera!
Perhaps reservation holders could receive a pre-delivery version of the guide so we could do most of our homework in advance.
I'm quite certain that the vast majority of Red buyers would gladly pay the fee for such a guide, so it would be self-supporting.
Good shooting and best regards,
Leo

I totally agree. His guides are invaluable, and are some of the best tech writing around.

I'm sure some folks will step up to write a full guide for the camera... whether official or unofficial. Since the camera will be changing so much over the coming months [via firmware updates to enable features], a bound guide makes no sense at this point. But an online manual that gets updated over time? I'm sure there will be a "real" manual from RED as well as unofficial information posted on here.

I full well realize that we are shooting at a moving target, so a format that can be updated would be required.
I don't think something online is the answer because, as noble a profession as we are, there might well be some pirates out there. If Red were inclined to foot the whole bill, online would be terrific!
Perhaps something along the lines of a three-ring binder to which updates and new indices could be added would work.
Good shooting and best regards,
Leo

There are some users here who have created similar things for other cameras in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if a PDF gets built - whether commissioned by RED or built by the community - that includes all the current/relevant details.
That said, they have stated in the past that there will be a manual available online when the camera ships. It only makes sense that the manual would be updated with each update for the camera.

One would hope that the manual Red supplies would be better than a manual that's cryptic; unfortunately, many manuals don't go into depth or provide much help for operators who are not engineers.
Surely there are others who have the technical knowledge and writing skills to do a good job, but I know Robert Goodman and find his guides far more useful and user friendly than the manufacturer's manuals.
Good shooting and best regards,

As of NAB, the camera's menu system was quite straightforward and logical. When you're shooting RAW, I assume there will be very few settings to choose from. I felt as though I could've figured it out in a matter of minutes. Every setting I saw was a term or feature I was already familiar with in theory... so nothing surprised me.
That was as of NAB, so it may be even better now.
And I'm certainly no engineer. The Varicam's deeper menus send chills down my spine. :)

Hi,
I understand Mr Goodman's latest guide will soon be available, it's for the Viper.

Some people just have a knack for explaining complex or unfamiliar things in a way that is easy to assimilate. No matter how simple many of the menus and functions of the camera are likely to be, a guide with just the right info well presented would be very welcome.
I would be willing to pre-order a Goodman's Guide to the RedOne, anybody else?
