View Full Version : 4K and 4K+ only with RED RAW PORT Module?
Hi guys, sorry for the dumb question but I didn't get it that well.
4K and 4K+ only will be possible with RED RAW PORT Module?
Or it will be possible to have that on RED Drive (320GB)?
And what about 10bit linear, 10bit log and 12 bit linear? All of these will be possible on RED Drive or 12bit will only be available with RED RAW PORT Module?
What are the possibilities of REDCode RAW codec?
Thanks fellas, and sorry if the text contains some bad english.

Hi GFOX,
please check RED's Format Option Page (http://www.red.com/formatoptions.shtml) for RED RAW PORT/REDCODE (on RED Drive)
&
RED FAQ (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1487) for all other things.
Enjoy the forum!
Ciao Carlo.
Let me see if I get that right. When is possible to use the REDCode codec that indicates that is possible to go directly to the RED Drive.
That's correct?
Thanks Carlo

REDCODE goes to onboard/outboard storage [RED DRIVE, RED RAM and onboard flash options]. REDCODE includes REDCODE RAW and REDCODE RGB when it's enabled. 99% of users will use REDCODE.
Some folks will require uncompressed RAW for some reason... most likely for higher frame rates, but occasionally for those who are allergic to compression [even though REDCODE RAW is rightly being described as "visually lossless"]. That's what the RAW data port is for... enabling data rates up to around 1GB/sec [4.5K@60p will likely be in this data range]. The RAW data port is a part for a very small range of the market.
REDCODE is part of the big deal behind this project... it makes shooting 4K realistic. I've never red a post by anybody who's shot with the camera [pretty much the RED guys at this point] who has recommended anything other than REDCODE RAW.
So Brook, the "Crossing the Line" and "Lady Milk" they were shot using REDCODE or the uncompressed Raw port, do you know? Both are very nice on visual, but "lady milk" don't have scene change, don't have action, BUT at 1080p I took a closer look at the frames. The contrast and 'corner' from the things are very well defined, great for some chroma.
It would be very nice if the guys at RED release a chroma footage at 4K REDCODE and an REDCine trial for the post guys to starting tests with the workflow and data management.
I'm a post guy and I'm very excited about RED. Hope the movies now have the nicest image quality when it's needed. Some nice movies can't afford for CineAlta and 35mm, and now it's possible to get that quality.
Thanks man.

I don't know about the Milk Girls... that was back on Frankie [an early prototype camera the size of a small transmission] and they may have captured uncompressed back then.
As for Crossing the Line, it was shot in REDCODE RAW 4K with Alpha cameras Boris and Natasha onto preproduction RED DRIVEs. That's based on what I've heard and read.
Lots of things have changed since the Milk Girls days. What are those things? No freakin' clue. But I know there are lots of 'em.
As for a REDCINE beta, this was discussed recently in the 4K Workflow section of these forums. I wouldn't expect a wide beta, personally... but that's me. I'm no software guy.
As for REDCODE chroma footage, there were some TIFFs released a while ago using an early form of REDCODE. If I remember correctly [and I don't always...], the images were compressed with the REDCODE that was current at the time and then reencoded into an uncompressed TIFF. They were designed to be difficult to key - liquids, fine mesh, etc.
A little searching found me the link: http://www.cinematography.net/Red/comp-matrix.html
Remember, these images were made with an old version of REDCODE back in November [I think] of last year. That may satisfy your craving... particularly knowing that those images are 7 months old.
I took some of these green chroma TIFFs to test. Those images are not so well lighten but it worked for the chroma. Even the hair of the girls I could get a nice result.
Will take some test with the water jar now.
Here are couple of shots. Didn't color correct to much. AND these images were first reduced to HD 1080p because 4K just is to much for my old low cost pc.
