I'm a big fat hypocrite for bringing this up, but I would proceed with caution when registering domains that contain the trademark of another company. RED may be cool with it, but you're on dubious legal footing if they decide otherwise. Case in point: I have received three "cease and desist" letters over the years for registering domains with "confusingly similar" names that those companies claimed was misleading the customer into thinking I represented that company in an official capacity. The fact that my sites were in effect helping those companies did not matter: they didn't control the content, so I lost that battle every time.

I know RED was pretty strict about the use of their logo, but did they ever put forward their stance on domain names? It would be nice to know. My personal feeling is that it would be good if they allowed it so long as disclaimers were placed on those sites.

EDIT: Actually, looks like this was also brought up here (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=827) and elsewhere, but I didn't see an official response from RED.

thinkbug-

We ended up going with a company/domain name that does not contain "RED", so it's no longer an issue for us, but you're right, it would be useful to know RED's position on such things. It's amazing how difficult it's become to find a good company/product name with a clear domain and trademark.

I've spent weeks trying to find a domain name. Of course .com Finally I looked up RED in different languages and found RED in italian being ROSSO. So I came up with Rosso Films!

I dont think the color red or therefore the spelling of the color red is trademarked..

I did register a reallllllyyy good domain name with Red in it... only problem... i totally forgot what it was!!!! and I cant find my paper work on it... but in either case im ok with that.. I have a really good one.. digitalcinemacameras.com

That defense would only work if your site was not about the RED camera. I can register a site called REDAPPLE.com and if it was just a site about fruit or my actual company name, no problem. If it was related to Apple Inc and RED Inc, then I'd be infringing.

But people do this all the time and get away with it. The bottom line is RED probably doesn't care or they would have said something by now. I'm just relating my personal (hand slapping) experience with this. So register away!

no i hear what your saying... im sure if someone started a sunglasses retail store called annies... and named the site annieoakleys.com then they would get rolled. so i know what your saying
