We here at "Jakes Foundry and Precision Mechanical Dodads" recieved about twenty pounds of catalogs last week from Misumi Corp. While thumbing thru them for items for a somewhat related project, I came across some very nice centerless ground rods in premade threaded configurations. It occured to me that instead of using fixed length rods why not mount a pair of double female ended rods on the camera and then screw in whatever length on the front and back that would be appropiate for a given use. Like shortys in the front if all you are using is a prime with a sunshade and all you need to mount on the rods is a follow focus unit. Or longer ones if using a full blown studio mattebox setup. etc. They come in different metals and coatings to suit your tastes. Put the basic rods under the camera in a black oxide finish and have the addons in stainless or matte hard chrome etc. There pricing seems reasonable enough and you won't have that goofy looking excess of rod hanging out front and rear. Look under the precision linear shafting section.

These are a bit cheaper.

Cool find. I like the idea of a reconfigurable set of rods.
