Sounds like this is a very popular kind of zoom these days. Ziess has its own with the T2.6 15.5-45mm, Angenieux has the Optimo T 2.6 15-40mm and Cooke offers a T2!! S4 15-40mm zoom. But why nobody challenges the big Optimo ? (The Zeiss Master Zoom story is specially interesting).
Why would you make your very first zoom a WA one rather than tele considering you already announced a prime set ?. Please donīt take me wrong...I love the WA angle zoom specially the Cooke but Iīm intrigued about the monopoly of the 24-290.

Jim,
Your website now has it listed as an 18-55mm lens - is that a typo or a change in spec?

Hehe..it's gotta be a typo 'cause right underneath it says 18-50mm.

Excellent move...
As I indicated on the "T or F stop" thread, offering either T or F stop marking (or both) would be very cool. If only T stop marking is offered, it's fine with me. To those setting exposure via RED's internal functions (histogram, zebra, and waveform) it doesn't really matter if a lens is marked in T stops or F stops. To those using RED One in a more traditional cine-style workflow, who choose to set exposure with light meters, T stops are really desireable.
IMO the X factor is shooting REDCODE RAW whenever possible. The ability to tweak multiple parameters of the RC RAW footage with REDCINE, including exposure levels, before sending footage to post, is huge IMO.
When it was first announced, I ordered the 18-50 SF zoom. I'll be stoked to recieve it, test it, and put it to use. I handled the 18-50 in early April when I was shooting the DSLR stills of it for my NAB mag article. I really liked the workmanship and small size/weight - a maximum mobility lens.

Thanks for the personal report Gibby. Its always nice to hear positive comments about build quality particularly when, no offense Red Team, there is no track record for the lens manufacturer.
I like the idea of using this lens for doco work where I want to keep the weight and size down yet still feeling like the quality of the image will suit narrative and commercial work (with proper filtration, etc).
People poo-poo the idea that the RedOne is a low cost camera just because the body is $17,500. They say the "real" cost of a RedOne based camera system is more like $50,000 -they should re-run the numbers. This $6,500 lens will cover a lot of shooting situations and you can always hire glass for specialty looks. Even with RedDrives, batteries, EVF and so on I think you can put together a terrific kit for less than the cost of a good HD B4 zoom lens.

Whether it is or isn't $50,000, that figure would still make it a low-cost camera for what it does.
I thought most people here think that $30,000-to-40,000 is the more reasonable estimate for putting together a basic package.
Are the primes going to be marked with T stops?

Are the primes going to be marked with T stops?
It hasn't been confirmed, but I'd hazzard a guess now that all RED lenses will be marked with T stops to be consistent throughout the line.

I agree though the less expensive, the better. It will mean more sales. The average cost shall be lower. That's simple though pure science... Economies of scale.

My basic point is that the availability of a small, lightweight lens that can resolve 4K, allows for easy handheld/Steadicam use and supports industry standard accessories for Cine style shooting AND is available when the camera is for $6,500 improves the economics for owner-operator types like me.
I love the idea of using lenses designed for still cameras on the RedOne but a proper PL mount lens, with rods, etc will get a friendlier reception on professional sets. I would also expect better focus racking, less breathing, etc.
I love the idea that this same lens can handle a high percentage of assignments from "A" camera narrative, to 2nd unit, to doco, to a lot of non-hardlined EFP gigs, etc.
I am especially excited about the flexibility this lens offers me when I am in one man band mode. If I'm shlepping this rig all day I want a lightweight kit that consists of the camera, RedDrive, battery, EVF, matte box, rods and a few filters (NDs, poly, soft or mist) in my vest to go with this small lightweight lens - sweet.

Good summary Blair...you outlined many of the reasons why I ordered the 18-50mm CF zoom. In addition, I ordered it because it should be a good compact, lightweight lens to fly on a stabilization unit.

speaking of the 18-50, did anyone notice if the front element moved when the focus or focal length was changed?
Evin Grant
06-08-2007, 02:26 PM
The front element does extend when zoomed but inside the front of the lens assembly so there is no noticeable extention from the side. or issue with a mattebox.
