Which RED formats can be shot with RED lenses?

Do the RED lenses only support the S35 4K format?

Or can you shoot anything on the RED lenses?

Thanks in advance.

You can shoot anything with them since they cover the whole S35 area. But be aware of different field of views/depth of fields when using smaller areas.

Are there any examples of depth of field comparissions posted anywhere?

Generally going from 4K full sensor mode to 2K windowed mode should be like going from 35mm to 16mm in terms of field of view / depth of field characteristics for the same focal length. So a 50mm lens will be twice as telephoto-looking (half the view) in 2K windowed mode than in 4K -- in other words, you'd want to switch to a 25mm lens to get the same view as you did with a 50mm in 4K mode.

And generally you gain the equivalent of two more stops of depth of field by switching from the 50mm to a 25mm -- in other words, you'd not only have to switch to a 25mm to match field of view, you'd also have to open up the f-stop by two stops to match the depth of field. Or to put it another way, if you kept the same f-stop, switching from a 50mm in 4K to a 25mm in 2K windowed would give you the equivalent of two more stops worth of depth of field.

I just did a simple test over at Panavision comparing depth of field on a 35mm-sized sensor camera (the Genesis) to a 2/3" CCD camera (the F900) which is a 2.5X magnification difference -- we had a 50mm on the Genesis and something near a 21mm on the F900 to match the FOV, and had to stop down the Genesis by 2.5 stops to match the depth of field. So I was on a T/2.0 on the F900 and a T/4.0-5.6 split on the Genesis to get roughly a similar-looking depth of field.

What this means in practical terms is that you might not find that the 18mm end of the RED zoom is wide-angle enough for you in 2K windowed mode and will need to get some shorter focal lengths for wide-angle shots.

Check the FAQ in my signature... there's an extensive "DOF" section.

Thanks for this very clear and useful responses!

So I guess in some situations the red 18-55 will feel like the lens on my old Canon Scopic, not tight enough, not wide enough :)

This RED forum is really building a fantastic database for cinematography. The sharing going on here is really fantastic.

I am very grateful.
