We need an official Red Wiki.

I know I'm not the first one to say this, but my cursory forum search didn't yield any other wiki requests from other users. I know they're out there. Maybe there's justification for not having a wiki that I missed?

I'd be happy to write some computer-related pages. I'm sure other users would donate their time and knowledge as well. Imagine the potential for this database in light of the amazing community that has been built here.

Thanks, but the RedHax wiki appears to be down? Otherwise there are some great links there.

Good links all around. I'm not suggesting we create an official wiki for my educational needs (though that sure would help), but more so out of principle. I know the build manual isn't as detailed as some people would like. And we should expect an influx of users once the Scarlets hit the streets. A wiki would be mighty useful in that situation.

an "official" wiki seems like a contradiction doesn't it?

Not really. It's affiliated with RED, maybe has moderator oversight, and is open to the Reduser community. My digital audio workstation, REAPER, has a wiki which is very helpful and informative:

As I said, I'm not familiar with all the logistical challenges. I've contributed to wikis but have not established or moderated them. Still, let's have this discussion, since the benefits could be quite good.

I think one problem with Wikis in the past has been that they've been too ambitious.

Covering allof filmmaking is redundant and unattainable. Something which has relevant red specific information would be a good step in the right direction.

So it should be RedUser wiki?

So it should be RedUser wiki?

Precisely. A RedUser Wiki shouldn't replace something like Wikipedia in scope. And it's not going to be a wiki-film-school. That's the beauty of a wiki in that it's only as broad as you need it to be. We start small and simply grow out from a solid foundation. Much of the foundation is already right here in these forums. Many current posts could be adapted to become the foundation for Wiki articles, a foundation which can then be built upon.

There are plenty of RED-specific topics that could be covered. If you check out my DAW's wiki, you'll notice we only have a few dozen topics, and most directly relate to the use of the software. After all, how many posts are there here asking about similar topics? Here are a few examples of some of the first articles that I would hope might be pursued in a RED wiki:

1. Updated chronology of all of Jim's (and other RED Team) updates. All in one place.

2. Extended troubleshooting guide. Built upon the manual.

3. Workflows. Updated as companies continue to integrate r3d into their software packages. This will be especially important as Scarlet arrives.

4. Computer hardware benchmarks / performance with common RED processing tasks. This isn't as general as the other topics because I could specifically help write / compile some of the information. Something accessible to help new Scarlet owners figure out how powerful of a Mac or PC they should purchase to accompany their powerful new camera.

More topics can be added as needed. There are plenty of other ideas that could be explored: a quickstart guide, the best strategies for effectively using Red histograms to properly expose your image (great thread over on ScarletUser could be adapted for that), and the list goes on.

So, the question is what topics would you all like explored? What topics would you all consider drafting or contributing to? What threads here on the boards could be adapted into a wiki format with some easy edits?

Imagine how useful a wiki could be in quickly getting new users up-to-speed. A good wiki could serve as an intermediate between the RED manual and the RedUser forum. All three have their purposes.

Look at some of the work being done in this thread to help streamline the forum's information:

But the task is simply too big for just one person. Enter the Wiki.

I'm not sure how frequently it's being updated, and it looks like it needs to be locked down against anonymous spammers, but there is a redwiki.org (http://www.redwiki.org).

Thanks for the link Jun-Dai. It looks like Paul Clements originally set-up RedWiki.org? Unfortunately, the site doesn't seem to have been updated recently. I sent the link to Joshua and hopefully we can coordinate a concerted effort.

It's a pity I didn't learn about the site until now. I guess one important task to tackle is publicizing a wiki so that the community is aware of it.

There are the normal dramatic trademark issues we need to address with that REDWIKI site... but i like the idea alot so whoever is in charge of it email me at Jarred@red.com so we can make sure everyone knows about it...

Hi Jarred, I'm the one working on the red wiki (not the redwiki.org one, new one). I'll give you an e-mail as I'm sure there are plenty O dramatic trademark issues with my design already. :cute:
