A very interesting year for videographers....
Sony, Canon, JVC and Panasonic will announce larger sensor chips for their range of video cameras in an effort to counter attack Red before it releases the Scarlet 2/3 rd systems.
But the specs won't suffice.
What are your predictions?

I think their specs will be fine -- it will probably be the prices that some will object to...

Well, if everybody moves to Micro 4/3, that should be better than 1/3" or 2/3" technically, at least for filmmakers. More likely 1/2" or 2/3" will be more prevalent across the board before that happens though. What needs to start happening is full on 1080P, not upscaled, not interlaced-based, but full 1080P 24p, 30p, and 60p.

I agree that the high end cameras will have great specs, but you think we'll be in for a surprise on the lower end? They would have had to develop a new format since Hdv and XdCam are a dead end in comparison to Redcode+11 stops DNR + 3K not to mention 120 fps.
Surely they must be thinking: it's now or never
At least Canon has shown us a modest hint of what it could potentially have to offer...

But aren't the new RED cameras supposed to do that already?

I predict Canon will take the sensor on the 5D MK II (or a variant) and stick it in a digital cinema camera body... as for mounts? Why not a Canon mount with a Birger type electronic interface to their L glass lenses, converted of course, to a cine design...
OK, maybe not this year... but for all the rave reviews they are getting on the 5D, why would they even look at their XL-H1 design center again?
That's not to say they will have the RAW workflow, system components... but don't count them out.
Any traditional camera company that is looking at what RED is doing, isn't going to just sit on their fat asses.... RED will get competition.
That said, I am totally in RED's camp ;)

Well... one thing that will be new...
ASSIMILATE will be showing uncompressed 4K playback to a Sony4K via an NVidia Quadroplex II from a machine the size of your average PC... storage/PC/everything - about the size of an average deskside workstation. And yes - uncompressed. About 1.6 GB/s (gigabytes) of sustained read throughput.
We'll have a good combination of RED material + 35mm material.

NOW THAT'S SOUNDS INTERESTING! Wish I could be there to see it. How much storage are we talking about Lucas?
