*warning - egregious self promotion ahead-*
I don't normally place "adds" for my company here but many people have recently been asking about when we would release our new killer workstation...
Well don't look now, but there's something new in the way of dual-socket workstations for Windows and Linux-based workflows...
(*hint* - and it's not a MAC)

Hi Adam,
I have sent several mail to you guys asking for a quote on some render machines but never any reply. I have a client that potentially need 1500-3000 core of cpu.

I want to see the redBOXX II with nVidia Quadroplex II and SCRATCH-CINE playing realtime 4K at 1.6 GB/sec.

heheh. well...
We released the "redboss" a few months ago with redBOXX II. It's faster than the dual Nehalems (including the newest 2.93Ghz MAC Pro) for realtime r3d playback and most transcoding tasks.

Apple just got pwned? : )
I selected a dual 3.2GHz with 24GB of RAM and a GeForce 285 and still barely over $4k

umm, you probably should hit the "update" button and look at the price again. That sounds like an impossibly good deal you got there. ;)

:desolate:
: )
Well $8,777 is still more than decent for those killer specs!

I wonder if by their omission I can assume that SSDs are too finicky in your eyes at this early stage of their development?

Too bad... At that price I would've ordered one or three...
Edit> How come the 1TB 7200rpm HDD is +$306 and the 1.5TB 7200rpm HDD is +$160?

good catch Jeff -
All of the drives we put in our systems are "enterprise class" - which means they typically have larger caches for better performance and higher "MTBF" (mean time between failures) ratings for higher reliability.
All the drives that is, except the 1.5TB drive -which is just a "consumer-class" drive.
We put it on the web configurator because many folks were asking for the larger capacity and aren't as concerned about using the highest quality drives. (we do tell customers the difference before they place the final order)
There is some internal discussion as to whether or not we should pull it from the configuration options until it (and the 2TB drive) are released in their "enterprise class" variants.

Adam. Do you actually see any differences in MTBF in your warranty claims and technical support?
I've heard a lot of discussion on this subject and the general concensus was that there was little to no reliability difference between enterprise and consumer lines.
