Hi guys,
Couple of weeks ago some friends rented a RED a we did a quick lens test. It's nothing fancy (light is not very special) but we used a fair amount of Nikons. So anyone who's interested in seeing the nikons perform.

Incredible amount of breathing going on there.

Yep, that's what I noticed too. Not all nikons work for narrative films , I guess.

Thanks guys.
Next time might be more helpful if you'd adjusted your lighting to keep it within reasonable bounds. The overexposure on the wide open makes it tough to get a handle on the details. And hold the focus point a bit longer in some cases.

Breathing can be problematic with certain shooting styles -- but it's not a huge factor in most. Nice not to have, but not a deal killer if you're on a budget. And you can shoot to take it into account without going through huge machinations.

And not all Nikons breathe the same. Some of those seemed much more extreme than I get with my Nikons.

breathing is a huge deal killer for me.. i sold my cooke 25-250 because i couldnt handle the amount of breathing.. now i have zeiss ZF.. with minimal breathing (not noticeable)

Hmmm, that 105mm 1.8 really is a neat lens!
Nice test and all but I don't see a problem with breathing. Usually things are pretty static for me and, if I need to follow focus, I feel the breathing is justified and can look pretty good if it flows with the movement of the characters/subject.

Very interesting! I've a few Nikons myself and am thinking about testing them on a Red. Wasn't expecting the breathing to be so pronounced. I'd be interested in knowing which versions of the Nikons were used in the test (DX, AF, AiS... )

Only watched the beginning, but it looked to me like you were pulling from ~2ft to ~15ft - longer than the average pull, I would think. Breathing is probably less noticeable between, say, 10ft - 15ft.

We used mainly AIS and ED lenses.
It's indeed true what Angus says. Normally you won't focus that far. I think the Nikons hold up very well. We are going to shoot a shortfilm next week with them.
I shall post some excerpts so you can see how they perform in a more normal environment.
