View Full Version : Lens coverage / sensors

Each 35mm film lens is designed to match a specific film gate. 35mm cine / 35mm FF.
The Red sensors are similar, however the S35 is somewhere in the middle.
Each lens has an optimum diameter circle of coverage to match it's projection field.
Does anyone have a chart or technical list to determine what lenses are best suited to match the S35 sensor 30mm X 15mm, or a list containing maximum circle of coverage of specific 35mm lenses. What 35mm cine lenses may not completely cover the sensors complete frame?

I would also like to see a chart showing which types of S35 cine lenses will cover the whole 5K frame for Epic X, for example.
The sensor is quite large. 30x15mm.

Matt Duclos has assembled a chart like this from the SALT tests showing max coverage circles. I don't know where to find it though. It is not posted on his website.

Matthew’s Web Page which covers the Image Diameters of the various professional lenses can found at: http://web.me.com/ducloslenses/DataRef/ImgCir.html

Thanks. Very useful chart. Question, though, about its measurements. So if the numbers match up completely and precisely, like a 34 max rating on a 34 image circle, does that mean there will be no vignetting whatsoever?
What is the image circle on a Master Prime 14mm? I believe Pawel has posted it here, but I can't find it. The 16mm is listed at 34, barely making the cut for "Red S35," which I am assuming means the Epic X?

Very useful chart! I'm shopping around for a set of primes and this will certainly help me reach the right decision.

got a question too!! does it mean that the lots of our standard lenses would vingette on the FF35 & co cams?

Yes. Almost no pro-cine lenses will cover full frame 35mm.

Out of curiosity, do the sensor dimensions for Red S35 include surround view, and if so, do you (Matthew, or anyone else for that matter, Red guys, etc) have any idea how much of the sensor will actually be recorded in 5k 16x9? There are a lot of lenses hovering around 31 & 32mm...of course, doing a slight crop of the sensor in post isn't too much of an issue, but it'd be nice to handle processing via redrushes without having to separate the clips shot on these borderline lenses in order to account for any vignetting.
Thanks again, Matthew, for providing and maintaining this database. Very useful.
Cheers,

And with regards to looking ahead to FF35, what about lenses like the Canon K35's? I haven't found a clear answer as to how much their image circle will cover on these larger formats, but I know it would be great to have a lens set built for cine use that will carry over to FF photography/vistavision-style work.
Thanks again...

The pixel size for the new S35 sensor is the same as for R1, .0054mm. If you multiply that out you get approx. 27mm width at 5k. Don't know if this is completely accurate though, does it include pixel spacing?

David,
The .0054mm dimension is accurate. Unless RED drops a new bomb on us with tomorrow's announcement. The sensor itself is supposed to be 30x15mm 2:1, which theoretically accounts for some look-around area and possible future expansion beyond 5K (5120 pixels). So it seems that Mysterium-X "S35" sensor is actually 5.5K in width with the camera having the ability to record at 5K.

There is some excitement and concern about lens coverage and the Epics larger sensor. In my case 95% of what I shoot is for TV and therefore it is photographed 16x9. Presently the Red One is 24.4x13.7mm. The Epic while having a 30x15mm sensor only uses 26.6x15mm in the 16X9 mode. This is not a big difference and it only changes any lenses angle of view by a small amount. Therefore most lenses will have little trouble. If you are lucky enough to be shooting 1.85 or even 2.40 you will need more lens coverage and field of view will begin to change significantly.
Personally I wish the Mysteruim X had more vertical chip height as this would be advantageous to all shooting formats (1.33, 1.78, 1.85 and anamorphic) with the exception of spherical 2.40. I also wish I was taller and women found me attractive.

During the intermission that followed, we poked our head into the kitchen, where the chef and 2 helpers were busy at work and barely acknowledged us. That was understandable, since I knew they were busy preparing the next course. We made our way out to the patio, where we spent a good half hour (not the 10-15 minutes as described on their website and reiterated by our hostess) before we were asked to return to the dining room. About half-way into the intermission, I checked the time: 9:35. Sigh.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I thought it better than starting a new one.
I'm looking to pull the trigger on an 18-85 RPZ, any word on the coverage on the Epic at 5K?
