Son - "Dad, this RED camcorder is weird... where does the MiniDV tape go?"
Father - "I'm not sure why the hole in the front is round, the tape doesn't fit. Honey, do you think it's for a MemoryStick?"
Mother - "Just take it back to Best Buy. Maybe you can trade it in and get an iPod instead."

You beat me to it.
The responses by the JQ Publics are great... and sad-- mostly not a clue.
Acehole, really like the avatar. I miss the honey though...

Wife: It doesn't have a strap? Listen, if you don't take it back to Best Buy this minute, the couch will be your bedroom, sic! :D
Wife: "Oh this is just silly, It doesn't even have a 600x zoom"

I thought the same thing when I saw that.
Camcorder = Camera + Recorder
Since it's not one of those old cameras with the VHS recorder over your shoulder, it's both a camera and recorder in one.
So how about the RED ONE and RED-DRIVE? Would having an external drive be like having a camera and a recorder? Would it be like this for a FireStore too?
Still, I don't think that the RED ONE is a camcorder.

some the remarks are halarious.. some guy wrote..
"who would honestly pay 17,000 dollars for a camcorder"
and then another.. "vaporware! until we see some footage this is vaporware"
who would go around shouting things like that when they have no idea what they are talking about.

Well, if there's one thing the RED journey has taught me, it's that people ALWAYS think things through before posting on the Interweb - right?

I wonder if he has the balls to post his pictures for criticism. Funny that they think RED needs a "real marketing person". I'd say we doing fine as we are. A traditional approach would lead to a traditional product, which is exactly what none of us want.

Man, Einstein didn't know how right he was with that "two things are infinite.." comment. I think most of the uninformed, completely misguided opinions of RED are the result of it simply being unlike anything that's ever graced the camera world before. People don't get it and, since most people are too lazy to know what they're talking about, immediately assume it's an overkill consumer gadget from some eccentric billionaire bent on extorting thousands of people. At least thats what I gather from the horde of forum minions on those sites.

LOL,
Did you read this: "I expect the final version to contain a webcam CMOS sensor or something."
If that's the case good job on the algorithms Graeme. Maybe the "...or something." he's thinking about is the wedge in picture.

Since it's not recording to the camera itself (records to RedDrive, RedFlash, or something else), I don't think you can call it a CamCorder. It's almost just a camera head, but not really even that. Obviously a new term will have be developed.
But ignoring the techincal reasons, I just can't call it a camcorder, video camera or anything like it. It's just so much more. It feels like the difference between a Yugo and a Ferrari.

They forgot to mention the 800x digital zoom and bottom-loading tape compartment.
...and what about the cool digital mosaic and watercolor filters?

What about the built in titler with the happy birthday and seasons greetings? It even plays polyphonic midi songs.
And the auto focus & auto iris, Oops! Sore subject... My bad... (no bashing)

Everything they do seems strange to me. I don't think they have anyone with real marketing working for them.
And thank god for that. What the RED team are doing are a marketing departments complete worst nightmare. Here, here to no (conventional) marketing department. Here, here to a product thats self marketable.

haha.
And it's not like Jim couldn't traditionally market this thing if he wanted. For proof, just search "Oakley" in Google. :)

This is my favorite quote ...
"If I remember correctly (from what, a year ago now?) this thing is going to sell for about $17,000 and will be competitive with the 'current' Hollywood movie cameras that cost upwards of $100,000....
of course...if it's taken them this long to be "almost done" with a prototype, it sounds to me like those $100,000 cameras of a year ago will probably be down in the same price range once the Red finally hits the market"
Too funny...

I'm remaining a skeptic until a real production model is in someone's hands.
Gee you can tell he hasn't been to or even talked to anyone who went to IBC last year. Is it really that hard to believe? Am I one of the few thosuand people with the free mind fit for believing?

Charles Darwin was right...Natural Selection of species is having a wide effect on the motion media industry...resulting in the impending extinction of those species that can't or won't evolve, or are too slow to perceive the changing environment around them.

I'm pretty sure you can through a video input of any sort.
Interestingly enough, Sony has been R&D'ing HD video conferencing.. Culminating in their $42,000 Ipela HD Webcam. (http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/27/sonys-ipela-system-pricey-hd-video-conferencing/) Would be interesting to see the uses of RED in a video conferencing application of some sort.

Heh, I jest and poke fun at the l33t d00dz who were trashing RED. :D
Can you imagine 4k video conferencing? Not that I'd want it at the corporate level though (they could tell all too easily that you were nodding off).

Yeah, bad idea. Breadcrumbs and eye sleep in 4K. Scary. But you could always use a Promist filter.

You think $42K is expensive? I just finished working on a project for cisco (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns669/networking_solutions_solution_segment_home.html) that uses HD video conferencing... the entire system costs $300K. It comes with three 65" plasma displays, a conference table, and 3 HD cameras in a small enclosure. The technology is very impressive but its hard to understand the experience until you've sat down and tried it out. Its very creepy seeing people on the screen that look like their across the table but are actually thousands of miles away. If you use the link watch out for the CEO popup.

Good Heavens !
When this becomes commonplace, where will the ugly people work ?
Interesting, Curt. Thanks for that.
Did you guys do the presentation vid ?
Nope, I did the engineering for the display structure and the tables... It was tricky getting all the images on the screens to look like they were really across the table, we spent close to a year in development figuring out the camera angles and usability aspects of the system. The lighting was a huge undertaking as well... They had Janusz Kaminski come in to help lock down the final details. Lots of fun though.
Cisco actually has stated that the technology will get cheaper, the $300K system will be closer to $10K in a few years.

HD (720p) is gaining some ground in the videoconferencing and security industries. A couple of Austin based companies I know that are involved in these applications are Lifesize and Covi ( www.lifesize.com and www.covihd.com )
The big problem is bandwidth usage. Although Cisco would love to sell you brand new routers etc, using 2 - 5 Mbps per stream is a non-starter for most corporate network managers. The acceptable alternative - encoding in real time to create a decent quality 500Kbps stream - is a very tough problem to solve.
Yeah, cisco loves to sell the entire backbone with their systems, one time I remember Chambers said that he loves high bandwith games and video... it helps sell routers :) The telepresense system for Cisco uses up 4 Mbps per screen so you need a hefty connection to run the 3-up model.
