Hi guys,

we´re prepping a documentary in Canada right now and did some tests yesterday with RC 36 and 28, 4K HD and 4K 16:9.

Is there a way to tell the difference between 28 and 36 ? I mean visually ?
We´d like to shoot 28 for it saves some space on the CF cards and drives, but wouldn´t like to sacrifice quality.

Thanks,

Frank

28 is fine for most work- TV, DVD, WEB.. so on
36 is best for FILM OUT, large screen projection.. so on

che was 28..

I always end up using 36, unless I need higher speed on cards, but there ya go.

You will be A-OK with 28

I think it really depends on the finish. I have shot lots of RC28 to the cards and it intercuts seamlessly with the RC28. I do not know the exact spec differenc in the two but to my experience the difference visually is something I have never noticed at all. I would guess that on very complex scenes there could be a slight difference but I have found RC28 and RC36 interchangable.

You pretty much have to shoot 28 to the cards (unless you are using 16gig cards)

Maybe more color information for your Color Correction session?

Or better explained, since its less compressed, the footage maybe more maleable without running into macroblocking kind of errors when you start pulling keys and whatnots for you CC session.

If anyone has the same shot on both formats (RC28,RC36 and one with the MAX setting) we would gladly run them thru our baselight and play with em, see if they are all as "flexible" and post the results here.

Thanks guys ! We´ll probably have some high detail stuff in our next show, shooting in the forest, but would prefer 28 for storage reasons and for the simple fact that we only own 2 16GB Red CF´s. They are simply too expensive. End format will be 1080p for tv by the way. We´ll keep testing...

Didn´t Soderberg shot both CHe movies with RC25?

RC24

RC24 back then would have been equivalent in quality to
RC 20 or so compared to todays builds.
