I've got a feature called Boys of Autumn that I have in the pre-production phases. It was inspired by the song of the same name by the same name by Canadian singer/songwriter David Roberts. The theme of the film revolves around growing up - you've got this handsome, 20 some year old college student who finds his world turned upside down after his younger brother commits suicide because he could no longer cope with bullying at school because he was different. Now with his life turned upside down, he finds himself vulnerable, discovering friends that are anything like he used to be, leading him to discover Crystal Meth. The story then becomes his struggle with the drug, and how it appears he has his life together again, and then things go terribly wrong, and he ends up paying the ultimate price. It is based on a true story. It's going to be shot entirely on Red.
Cinematography was to begin this fall, however it has been delayed to 2008 due to Red delays, so it won't be ready for any of the 2008 film festivals. However, this is not a bad thing at all - I would rather have the Red team put out a good product, rather than rush the camera out the door.

I believe the film you are referring to is Wanted which is by the Director of Night Watch. It stars Angelina Jolie among some other name talent. The original press release said RED was to be used for VFX shots but now I think I heard somebody on the forum mention that it was being used as a primary camera on the set. Anybody know if that's correct?
Also, Peter Jackson has been quoted as saying he is seriously considering shooting The Lovely Bones with it. He is also known to have reserved 5 RED cameras.

I'm sure many projects currently in pre-production would be itching to shoot with the RED if it is available by the time principle photography begins, but I couldn't imagine one waiting for it. As for projects not yet in any stage of production, those are the ones that might have the liberty of waiting. Once the ball of production begins rolling, it is very difficult and very costly to stop it. It would simply not be wise for a feature length production to rest its entire finances, cast, crew and organization upon the future release of a piece of technology.
....exceptions being the gigantic films that seem to have unlimited cash.
A respectable DP was recently asked about his thoughts on the camera. He said he has none yet. It's not available. Tomorrow he can go shoot with a Genesis, D20, F900, etc, but not the RED. When it's out, he'll be more than happy to share his thoughts. Until then, he's got to continue working and he can only do so with what is currently available.
I personally can't wait to work with it, but for now I agree with that DP.

Hey Owen,
We've got a feature in Pre production in the UK and we're hoping to shoot Red... but I can't see it happening. We have our schedule and we have to keep to it. Red would be a great bonus because of the quality at the price point. That having been said we have limited resources and will probably end up going with a proven route. Probably a Cinealta 900.
I don't have a particular problem with that, but I did have my hopes up after NAB. I am looking forward to the freedom that Red offers. I got into this business to make films and I have worked on some pretty cool projects along the way, but I hope that Red will give me the freedom to make the films that I feel ought to be made , not just those with 'x' amount of money attached.

I talked to my friend who is doing one of camera operators on Wanted. He said that he didn't see any RED camera on set. They are working with 35mm completely... But who knows, maybe they are using it on some secret sets...

I am in the early stages of planning a feature that I'll shoot with my RED, having some concept sketches done and working on the script, but it's a ways off. I'm planning for January '09. It makes no sense for me to shoot it before the RED comes anyway because I'm not far enough along on the project and wouldn't pay for renting a top of the line camera for three weeks anyway, not when I'm trying to save money by just using my own equipment I already am paying for.
