trivial question really. is it safe to change lens while the RED is still turned on?

absolutely.
Just be careful of the hamsters, they will hiss at you.

On topic, good to know about the changing of lenses. As a newbie I always assumed you'd have to power down.

Ok. Back to the original question. I have never turned off the camera to change a lens. And I must have changed over 100 times.
