Because movie production is a cottage industry primarily and the Chinese and to a large degree the Japanese often concern themselves with larger forms of production, mainly consumer. That's where you earn billions, not millions. Most companies producing technology for motion picture production do so out of a passion of the media or to add credibility to their consumer products "As used by the professionals" mentality.
The other problem is the production philosophies of consumer products is usually carried over to the professional sector. Upgrades to cameras are trickled into the market rather than taking huge leaps at a time. Red is in the unique position of being a new company starting at the top and therefore they rely on making that huge leap in order for us to buy into the idea.
