Let's face it, a year from now there will be thousands of Red Pro Prime sets out there. We always here that Cinema Glass is always a great investment but I am wondering what will happen to the value of these sets once everyone and their mother owns a case. I'm guessing used RPP prices will be fairly nice a year from now too. 2 years ago, a set of Zeiss primes seemed like a great investment, given the current market...but with the RPPs, I'm already foreseeing a lot of LA clients expecting you to have a set with your Red package because they will be THAT common and that will ultimately drive their value down.. Just thinking.. :yikes:I can't wait to see frame grabs and hear info about them

I would certainly rather ponder this issue with a less than $20K set than a $100K set.

i would be more concerned when i had bought a set of Zeiss T2.1 or old Hs for 30 000 usd.

I think initially the RPP's are going to rent for about the same as an old Standard speed set ($250ish) S4's Ultras and Masters are going to hold their rental price. Resale of Old standard speeds is going to crash, as will the old superspeeds a little bit. Jim is going to sell a lot of glass, just like he has sold more PL mount cameras than any company out there.

Moral of the story don't by glass that you hope to make money on, only buy it if you know you already can.

We'll my T2.1 are paid off and putting money in the bank. I still can't get over how good they look on the Red (I like them better than S4s, but I'm funny that way). I seriously doubt the price "Crash" will be as dramatic as all that, good lenses will always retain value. The RPPs will certainly change the ground rules though.

I am amazed at how much I love my T2.1's as well, and for 3,500 they were a steal. I enjoy them quite a bit more than supers. I can't wait to see the RPP's though, I am sure we will all be left with our jaw agape. Just wish I had the cash to pony up for them...

Have to agree with Evin and Ryan, the standards have always looked very nice on the camera. They do look a lot nicer than Supers. Of course the portholing can be a pain but it's only very occasionally that it has become apparent and even then was simple to compensate in post.

I imagine after RPP's are widely available a set would sell for about 12 - 15k on the open market.

Yes the Standards look great on the Red, I'm a huge fan. However this is about the price they will demand on the market. I just think all this new PL glass will burst the bubble a little bit.

It does burst the bubble a bit, but you still are not going to find your average joe shelling out 12k for a set of lenses. When you see sets hit the 5k mark thats when the rental's will take the huge hit. Also the ability to use still lenses with a bit more ease on scarlet and epic, could put a hit on things as well.

I don't see any immediate drop in good professional used glass. The Rebels don't compete, the Zeiss Compacts are too expensive and their speed varies, the new Cooks are T2.8, Elites won't be available till the end of the year, and RPP will go to early reservation holders first. New Red owners will still need high quality optics, like Zeiss standards and super speeds. Frankly, after looking at the specs of most of the new optics being offered, my Zeiss T2.1 standard set looks damn good (which I bought in 1997!).

I think in the near future the only real price adjustments we'll see are the over-inflated prices coming back down to earth. No more sets of 25 year old speeds selling for the same price as a brand new set of Ultras nonsense. This has already started to happen, prices correcting. You can bet a nice clean set of super speeds will still be worth a pretty penny for a while. They will no doubt settle into a price category cheaper than the upcoming T1.3 Illuminas, which is where the supers were priced only a couple years ago before the bubble anyway.

If anything, all the new offerings should put some pressure on the higher end offerings. IMO, I don't see Ultra Primes holding their current values very long. Once RED has 14mm, 18mm, and other lens choices, the only reason to buy Ultras will be for the name alone. ...Of course, they still have that beautiful 10mm and the fantastical 8R.

I think the Zeiss compact primes will appeal to many with the FF35 coverage, but the inconsistent speeds across the set and the price vs. just buying the ZF lenses with a Nikon mount make them a non-purchase for me. The new Cooke Panchros could be real winners if Cooke chooses an appropriate price for the set. Even though they're T2.8, the speed is consistent across the line and they all have /i data ability.

For me, of all the new primes that are showing up, I'm still most interested in the RPP's, new Cooke Panchros and the T1.3 Illuminas. The Rebels don't interest me at their currently stated price point and feature set. The IB/E supreme lenses do interest me, but I haven't heard actual pricing yet and I'd like to see how they compare to the RPPs. I'm also a little leery of how their specs have changed to keep step with RED's announcements.

Standards do look great on Red One.

Even the old old Standards look great on read. I mean I guess they should they are the same lenses with beefier housing. I am surprised not more people are trying to grab them up.

Yea, I can't really see the T2.1 Zeiss standards dropping that quickly. I say a year from now yes, but it will take a while. I would pay decent cash for a set of Zeiss T2.1 - Evin and everyone is right, they are so nice on the Redddd
