how many people are going to shoot primarily 2k?
(real question.. not being sarcastic)
Im just planning out my choices of lens and trying to figure out if i want to do mostly 4k or 2k.. i know i can get awesome super 16 lenses for not that much... but maybe im better off using cool nikons and shooting 4k..

There is also 1080P mode, which uses the whole sensor I believe, so you can use your 35mm lenses and get 35mm depth of field, plus 1920 x 1080 is not all that worse than 2K anyway.

Very true...
Also to consider: one thing you gain with 2k over 1080p is the ability to shoot REDCODE RAW instead of RGB.

I was wondering though... if 1080P 4:4:4 (RGB) is derived from 4K Bayer, as opposed to 2K RGB being derived from windowed 2K Bayer... is it possible that 1080P would have (slightly) better color resolution for red and blue information than the red and blue in 2K derived from 2K Bayer?
Yes, it makes sense that 2K RAW would be less data to record than 1080P RGB -- do both modes use REDCODE compression? Or would you have to record uncompressed 10-bit 4:4:4 1080P?

Gibby,
I'm not to good with computers, but in your profile it says you do not allow emails. Or did you mean something else?

Hmmm…that’s a very good question. My guess is that, as you suggested, the 1080p 4:4:4 RGB derived from 4k Bayer may have a little better color resolution than the 2K RGB derived from 2K Bayer.

Yes, I believe it has been stated by RED Team that 2K RC RAW, especially at lower frame rates (24fps), should have less data rate and storage requirements than 1080p RGB. It’s my understanding that the 1080p RGB also uses REDCODE compression. Uncompressed 10-bit 4:4:4 in 2k and 1080p is an option previously mentioned by RED Team as being available via the dual HD-SDI taps.
--------------------------------------
I guess when you gain something you give something up. 1080p 4:4:4 RGB is scaled from the whole 4k sensor, thus the more saturated chroma and shallow DOF possibilities, whereas 2k RC RAW is windowed from the 4k sensor, but you gain the advantage of using REDCINE with the RAW files to tweak the parameters of the footage before sending it to post. Last year in the development process, it seems I remember Stuart English explaining a good reason why scaled 2k RC RAW would not be an option. I mentioned 2k in my post because I really like shooting RC RAW whenever possible because of the footage processing options available in REDCINE.
The final specs for RED One haven’t been published, so there could be some surprises there, and some of the specs mentioned earlier by RED Team could have changed. Looking forward to getting those final specs!

I sent you a PM yesterday afternoon, about 2:15p. That PM has my personal email box address in it. I never noticed that I had emails through RED User blocked. Even on my web site I've left the "@" sign out of the middle of my listed email address, because webcrawlers and spiders were having a field day getting me on tons of email spam lists. Check your RED User PM inbox and see if you got my PM of yesterday afternoon, then email me on the box I listed in my contact info at the bottom of the PM. (You'll like that PM - it talks about fishing, 3D, and cool stuff!)

Another advantage of 1080p RGB is 60fps for overcranking using the full 35mm field of view. You can also do 60fps on 2K RAW, but it would be windowed.

It might be something to test, 2K windowed RAW versus 1080P RGB downsampled from 4K. Maybe even as a chromakey bluescreen test to look at edges. Although I suspect that there won't be much difference actually.

wasn't there something about if you shoot 4k and scale to 1080p you also pick up more light ( as in a higher ASA rating)??
