View Full Version : Best use of Varicam or F900 after you buy a RED?

I've heard boat anchor.
I was considering whether kids could use one to slide down a hill in the snow, but I don't think the Varicam would stack up to one of those plastic things. Maybe the F900...
You could throw one at an attacker in order to gain time to run away.
Any other ideas?

Or you could use it to stand on while you trying to reach something on a high shelf.

Speaking of coffee tables...I've got a friend in L.A. who has a pair of Oscars (no not the fish) sitting on his coffee table and glued to the head of one of them is an alligator clip making it the worlds heaviest roach clip. Mayby something practicle could be done like this.

sell to a shitty film school
Los Angeles Film School would love to have another one of these! That way they could brag in their marketing text that they've increased their high-end camera department by 25% in the last year! [which would just mean they bought one more nice camera]
This thread is awesome.
I think giving the F900 a dignified death would be proper, dress it up a little bit, add a few trinkets to the side, and make it a movie prop, I'm thinking like a specialized gun in a sci-fi movie or maybe a motion tracking device, or sonar imaging.

Send it to a taxidermist for mounting. Then wall mount it in the den between the 3/4" tape reel display and the petroglyphs.
Or you can put in a time capsule.

Agreed. With a few modifications, it would make a convincing Interdimensional viewer.

Sell them to the Pana or Sony representatives. They know what to do.

Mount two of them together and you have a 3-D Interdimensional viewer!

They really wouldn't even be good for behind the scenes docs, because they are too bulky. You could get a Canon HV20 for a grand, and it's like ten times lighter and easier to use. Plus the HV20 has higher resolution than the Varicam. :)

If you own at least one, write them off to charitable organizations. Depreciation will bring a Varicam package down quite a ways, and its value often pushes former owners to the limit (as a side example, I was offered $500 the other day for my GY-HD100; ~160 drum hours plus Anton Bauer kit). You can probably get some type of value for the write-off, which can certainly go to your Red investment. Just a thought.
Have you tried Green Sheet in Minneapolis?

Make it an exhibit at the Smithsonian... under "it seemed like a good idea at the time..."
Or maybe the PT Barnum Museum under "there's a sucker born every minute"
Or in the RED Museum - "R.I.P - Like fish in a barrel" exhibit.

I was thinking use it as a club for the whack-a-mole game. But it might be too heavy for that...
It sucks because theres no bottle opener on an F900. They weren't thinking ahead.
Jonathan L. Bowen
06-20-2007, 05:07 PM
Yeah I think they should have built more features into the F900 to make sure it would never be totally obsolete. Like let's say you stuck a toilet paper holder on the side of the camera and right next to that you had a bottle opener feature, when the heck are those two things going to be obsolete?! Not for a long freakin' time!
Maybe on the other side it could have a compass, those can always be useful, and perhaps a little compartment you can open and close to fit your keys or loose change. With all of these little features, not only would the F900 have made a great camera when it came out, it would have had a solid retirement plan, too.
Look at the picture Tom posted. See this is what happens when you don't plan for retirement. ;)

So what exactly are we pissed out about the F900? I actually wanted to buy one when I saw the DVD but I just couldn't afford it..
Oh now I know..I think we all hate Sony and co. for selling us overpriced cameras..or?

Our Varicam will replace our rear view camera we use when backing up the Grip truck to the generator. A DVCPRO HD rear view mirror, if you will.

Give the camera to a good person who has a good story to tell, who has the skills to tell it?
After that person's first movie is a hit, then they can use Red for their second one?

They don't put old DPs in the dumpster do they? No they have a very nice retirement facility in Woodland Hills. I'm willing to provide a nice place here in semi rural Oregon for all the F900s out there. There is also plenty of room for 65mm, 35mm, VistaVision and other archaic forms of media recorders. Lets not forget early (no older then mdl. 3As) Steadicams. Also any related support equipment (gearheads, 10x Cooke, Angenieux etc. zooms and pre T1.3 Zeiss primes) These elder statesmen of the industry deserve this and they will be lovingly cared for.

I like this idea, it could be fashioned into a trophy with a plaque that reads; In recognition of your visionary and extraordinary nay saying of the Red camera project in its early stages of development.

I think Sony's F900 should sit in George Lucas' Digital Museum...
right next to another famous digital creation - Jar Jar Blinks.
We'll leave it to Historians to determine: masterpiece, ahead of it time, or just a bit misunderstood.
