That first pic is perfect, reflection of the Empire State Building says it all...these lenses are home.

That's the 25mm? That lens looks huge! Hopefully I can come by to see them in person some day soon. Thanks for your trailblazing ways, Mark (and Jim)!

Cheers,
Clint

Anyone else notice Mark's greasy thumbprint on the lens in the last picture?

I knew they were big, but wow bubba! Guess it won't seem like much of a size downgrade from my Cooke 20-60. At least they will be every so slightly lighter...

It's not the size of the lens but the size of the envy that matters most. ;)

Shawn Nelson

Mark, your lens says T1.9, why is that? Demo?

I'd have to guess pre-prod units, as Jim stated that shipping versions would correctly state "T1.8" on the scale

Probably stupid question but why would someone want to focus past infinity if the focus scale is calibrated (and the mount is collimated properly)?

Best regards,
A. Järvinen

Mike Prevette
05-05-2009, 06:23 AM
Usually in longer lenses to take into account Heat expansion of the lens, and on some older zooms to allow you to compensate for miss aligned internals.

Jeff Kilgroe
05-05-2009, 11:01 AM
So can someone @ OffHollywood or anyone else who has received the lenses so far actually give us a detailed review?

I'd really like to know more about the "unit focus" on the 50mm and longer models. Does the front element of the lens move on the non-IF focal lengths?

chuck colburn

Best regards,

Lots of operators liked their lens to pass infinity. It gave them a feeling that they had for sure hit the inf. mark. And as Mike said on the longer lenses it compensated for the thermal expansion of the long lens barrles.

Or just awkwardly emphasize the spelling

"Were you dealing with Mark Peder-SEN or Peder-SON"?

Ah Danish vs Anglicization of spelling, just like I should actually be Neilsen instead of Nelson.

Hey Shawn, if a you're Dane, be proud of that "SEN"! I am. My brother married into Neilsens from Minnesota. Good folks!

Seems the Swedes went for the "SON"...

Indeed I am a Dane, but it was my g-g-grandpa who changed it from Neilsen to Nelson. I've considered changing it back but i'd have to change it for myself, my wife and my kids (too much hassle at this point). Though interestingly I kept in the same end of swimming pool and married a Chriestenson (Ellis island bastardization of Christensen).

So hmm, how to bring this back...

Hey Mark ... for the record - I'm of Danish and Norwegian descent. Back in the family tree it was "sen" - then somewhere in the line - "sen" was changed to "son". Also, my parents met at Mankato State University in Minnesota. My middle name is Lee - named after my grandfather - Lee Littlefield from Eltkon, MN - one of the greatest men I ever knew.

And I married a Swede - in addition to having an ex-wife who is also Swedish. So ... seems the "SON" went for the Swedes!

Well, never met a Scandinavian I didn't like :)

For the record, my middle name is Lester after an Uncle that died when he was 2 from an acute appendicitis. OK, not sexy.

I just checked out Marks RPP's yesterday.

I'm really impressed, I was expecting alot less considering the price. Now I can't really understand why you would rent or buy Ultra Primes by comparison.

I find this hard to believe but, I am definitely a skeptic, I'm just not seeing the disadvantages yet.

To be fair, there are a lot of qualities to the Ultra Primes. I'm sure the SALT will have some interesting results. From our testing the UPs excellent resolution, contrast and color accuracy. And on a basic practical standpoint, there is a far greater range of focal lengths available, including many wide angles (the RPPs currently stop at 25mm).

It's great to be excited about new glass, but the current standys are great as well.

No I absolutely agree, and keep in mind, my impressions are without thorough testing.
I was thinking about it on the train today and obviously focal lengths are a real consideration for some shows. Another big consideration, for someone like me considering investing, is how the mechanics stand the test of time. Very hard to determine that. Cookes have a very distinctive bouquet for example, and that's something important to me as well. Buut...

But basically when you consider price (And always with Red is has been Price/Performance) it's hard to see the disadvantages. That's all I'm saying.

I am surprised.

Exactly! I want my RPPs to last 20 years. I asked Jim about that and he seemed to think they would. Also, he said they designed them for economical repair, being of an internal modular design (as he described to me at NAB)

Mark, what are your thoughts on long term viability/usefulness of RPPs if Red is about to do a FF35 push beginning of next year? Their Monstro is only sized for FF. And yes I know about cropping, but it seems they want to drive the market to FF

I think most folks will be cropping on the FF35 unless LOTS of new lens choices appear really fast. I expect to be shooting with RPPs for long, long time. And if I am pleasantly surprised by a bunch of FF35 lens choices in the near future ... I'm sure I'll be happy I'm not stuck making lease payments on S4s.

Do you think? Or are they adding FF sensors simply as a part of the DSMC puzzle?
My interest in a Scarlet FF35 over the S35 is strictly about having my Canon lenses behave in the manner to which I have long been accustomed. I bought a cropped DSLR when they were new, and would never choose to go back to one.

I feel you are right with your answer. Otherwise Red would have come out with FF35 lenses instead of the Pro Primes. I believe most people will shoot 5k or 4.5k with professional cine glass which they already know and love.

I totally agree: light-loss and depth of field are issues that make fullframe a difficult format for cinema. More than 5K sounds awesome but comes at a price.

I don't want to run off with Mark's thread but what is this all about? Coming from video I thought a full 35mm sensor and cine glass was kind of the holy grail for digital cinema.

Thanks mark for the footage.

Shawn, could you elaborate on what he told you? Or Jim? I know UPs are designed to be easily serviced, I was wondering how the RPPs compare in that regard.

Jarred Land

Shawn is correct.. the RPP's have a cellular mechanical design that will accelerate repair time tremendously.

We are targeting a 48 hour turn around instead of the normal 2 weeks... This is an important piece to the puzzle that was important ( at least to us) as we know if one lens goes down that means that for some people the whole set is put on the shelf till it gets fixed.

Is this another phrase for interchangable parts or sections that can be replaced easily?

one more step on the modular design chain i'm assuming. makes sense if it can be achieved efficiently without affecting quality/functionality. which it seems (until i get my hands on some ;)) has been accomplished.

It's a bit remind me on time when I was in SoHo NYC about 9 years ago.

I lived there in a close neighborhood or around the corner of that block from where are today

Offhollywood headquarters: 580 Broadway, New York, NY 10012>>> (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=580+Broadway++New+York,+NY+10012&sll=37.649034,-95.712891&sspn=65.511144,103.447266&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17&iwloc=A%3E)

My address was at 132 Crosby St., NY 10012>>> (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=132+Crosby+St.,+New+York,+NY+10012&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=65.900117,103.447266&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17&iwloc=A)

that is the next street parallel to Broadway at direction to East Houston St.

After some digging in my tape archive I found a little documentary footage that I shot on Sony HandyCam and tell you more how was there about nine years ago: LINK>>> (http://homepage.mac.com/sanjinjukic/RED/My_NYC_Project2000_05.mov)

One more thing:

RED Pro Primes are probably the best valued cine lenses for the price and performance at the market today, no doubts.

But I'm still using "dogs" especially for handheld and here is the latest shot from yesterday: LINK>>> (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=428724&postcount=18)
