"stereovision" - single camera, dual anamorphic thru a prism. 2k each eye.

Here's a video of the Technik rig at NAB. I can't watch it because the computer I'm using does not have the right program in it. But it might be of intrest to others.

Not the greatest photos I know (taken with the iPhone's crappy camera sorry) but here's a couple from us here in Japan:

Will have to post some pics... Karl while the 3d film factory rig looks interesting and is certainly affordable, this thread is far from closed.

well, pretty sure it's okay to post since that pic has been on our web site/brochures for along time already.......

http://stereoscopestudios.com/v2/production.php

...Couple things here to point out here. First of all, the above link (I know it's over 6 months ago) is either incorrect or the site has been hacked or is no longer there. It takes me to a page for buying levitra so I can have better sex.

Second issue... May want to rethink the naming of the product and get "RED" out of there. Before RED busts someones balls over trademark infringement. Just sayin... So is this product still in development, does it exist? You guys still around?

umm...that's a picture I found on the internet I have nothing to do with that rig. I think it's from Hong Kong.

Who is the manufacturer of "stereovision"?

Pedro Guimaraes
01-16-2010, 02:45 AM
Stereovision? was invented by 3D legend/pioneer Chris Condon in 1970.

In 1970, Stereovision, a new entity founded by director/inventor Allan Silliphant and optical designer Chris Condon, developed a different 35 mm single-strip format, which printed two images squeezed side-by-side and used an anamorphic lens to widen the pictures through polaroid filters. Louis K. Sher (Sherpix) and Stereovision released the softcore sex comedy The Stewardesses (self-rated X, but later re-rated R by the MPAA). The film cost $100,000 USD to produce, and ran for up to a year in several markets.eventually earning $27 million in North America, alone ($114 million in constant-2007 dollars) in fewer than 800 theaters, becoming the most profitable 3-Dimensional film to date, and in purely relative terms, one of the most profitable films ever. It was later released in 70 mm 3-D. Some 36 films worldwide were made with Stereovision over 25 years, using either a widescreen (above-below), anamorphic (side by side) or 70 mm 3-D formats. In 2009 The Stewardesses was remastered by 3-Ds legends Chris Condon and director Ed Meyer, releasing it in XpanD 3D, RealD Cinema and Dolby 3D.

So last year we got a hold of this stereovision system thru another 3D legend Ray Zone. We decided to try it out on the RED one as a test/proof of concept. It worked. We split the image and unsqueezed it in the Quantel pablo and the result was very interesting. At this point we need more funding to update/upgrade the system to make it usable. But the concept worked.

For more info on the system PM me.

If it's possible to get good quality stereo squeezed onto a single chip like that - it seems like a great business opportunity for someone to produce high-quality optical rigs. It bypasses the need for the second camera and a mirror rig so it could cost a decent amount and still be cheaper than a 2 camera setup. With a 5k chip you'd get pretty decent HD stereo.

I was thinking the same about the new 5K cameras...

4.5k mode was helpfull too...

Yes it's possible and I have worked on other similar projects wth the RED. All of our "proof of concept" prototype's produced workable results. It does of course create more post work. Since you have to slice each frame to get your L&R and correct some distortion issues. The pablo makes this a snap. Fortunate for us we happened to have one in the next room over.

Unfortunately, money is required to move any of these concepts and prototypes forward. If your interested in exploring these ideas further contact me and we'll talk more.

Meanwhile, beamsplitters are were it's at.

Hi Pedro,

Of course it takes a bit more work in post. Although it seems like it would be slightly less hassle on-set.

A side-by-side split (as opposed to top/bottom) also guarantees the rolling shutter is identical on both eyes, which is a nice bonus.

Unfortunately I'm not in the position to fund the development of a production-model...

Pedro Guimaraes

Rolling shutter the same, color the same since it's same sensor and same lens, never have to worry about camera settings, file management, less gear to rent, less data to stor (initially anyway) also we had a design for the phantom with a variable inter-ocular, also a macro phantom 3D setup for doing insects etc..... all cool stuff. Maybe some day some of it will see the light of day so to speak....

people have been inventing stereo gadgets for over a century! Very few of them get taken to the next level. With the current interest in the market you never know...

I have no doubt that RED could make a great single-camera stereo lens. Heck, if anyone could I bet it's RED. But I think they have other priorities for the time being.

Still systems like these (above) have obvious limitations and problems. I know since I have had some expirience in these "waters".

but they would Fulfill special shots during a production. Right now If you have to pick one camera "system" to shoot a story you still looking at a beamsplitter of some kind.

I hope people will continue to experiment, since that is the nature of stereoscopic 3D imaging technologies and advancements.

I have some ideas..... = )
