Eric Johnston and Jim Elias from Arri stopped by the shop to show us some lenses for 3D applications on our parallel rig. They brought along two Arri/Zeiss Master Zooms. These are two incredible lenses are far as optical performance and our i/o and convergence motors had no problem moving their significant mass on the Reds. It was just impressive to see two of these lenses next to eachother shooting 3D.

Nice! I see you're using a VF FF, any additional hardware needed to sync two motors for racking focus?

Looks pretty powerful!

The interaxial distance between those lenses looks like it is not really usable for 3d....

We've shot with interaxial distances anywhere from 1 mm to 12 inches. It all depends on lens length, subject distance and desired effect. Even an interaxial distance of 5 feet could be useful in some applications.

Chris, so how do you get an interaxial distance from 1mm with a side by side rig with lenses like that ? Just curious...

Cheers

I don't believe he said "with this rig"...

Just shot with a masterzoom once. No need to say with a single one..
Impressive to see 2 side-by-side.

Correct, we have a beamsplitter as well for the SI-2K. It is small enough to fit inside the AR revolution on a steadicam and our rig actually shot quite a bit of the Film "Dark Country" for Geoff Boyle. We are currently working on a beamsplitter for the Red, although it won't allow for Master Zooms :)

We are also working on quite a few 3D systems for all types and sizes of cameras.

Good to hear, for now and for the availability we will go for the PS technik rig for the feature we are going to shoot, but keep us posted on your rigs.

We also used the ARRI 3 Axis FIZ system.

Indeed we did. If you are looking for a remote 2 axis system, Eric was telling me that they have a new hand controller and motors which are more affordable than systems they've had in the past. And I can tell you from seeing it at our shop and NAB that its VERY nice. Motors and very powerful and fast and the hand controller is one of the most impressive I've ever seen.

In regard to the viewfactor system for 3D, we didn't have any extra hardware although I think Curt may have programmed some extra software for it. You'd have to get in touch with viewfactor for all the details though.

The new Arri wireless lens controller system is available from Abel and it really is terrific. Totally intuitive to use (I learned it in about three minutes) and the motors are the strongest available bar none. And it is shipping today. ;-)

We have a unit on FAIR GAME and they love it.

Is it actually currently possible to shoot 3D on a Stedicam? If so, is there any way to control Iris, Zoom or Focus on such a setup?

Yes it is. Our SI 2k Beamsplitter fits on a steadicam. It even fits inside the AR Revolution.
