View Full Version : Strange codec behaviour...

Hi Everybody, I have a problem...

I've just ended shooting some RED footages. My project was 4K 2:1 24p, ALL CLIPS at 320 ISO. Everything was ok. Every night I checked the clips with RedCine on a Vista PC. Everything was ok too!
Now I come back in my studio and checking the clips on a Mac Intel with RedCine ALL CLIPS ARE OVEREXPOSED!!!
If I turn down iso to 100 the clips seem to be ok, but the same files on RedCine on Vista PC are ok (320 ISO), on RedCine on a Mac Intel are overexposed... If I open the clips with Clipfinder (or opening a qt proxie) the result is the same: CLIPS OVEREXPOSED...

I think it's a codec problem... But why? and how can I see and use my clips on Mac with the right exposure?
I tried to use RedCine 3.18 or 3.12, and reinstalling the codec 3.8 and 3.5... without any good result...
QT version is 7.6...

Thanks everybody!!!

Miki

Miki-

Might want to compare the gamma settings on your Mac and PC. Under default conditions, PC gamma and Mac gamma are much different. Variance in gamma settings could definitely make it appear to be blown out or too dark (see chart below)

For more information, read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction

Hi Ryan, thanks for your reply!
I open a clip in PC and exported a jpg, then I open the same clip in MAC and exported a jpg.... If i look at this 2 jpgs in the same machine (PC or MAC) THEY ARE DIFFERENT!!!!

I think it's a QT 7.6 and REDCode bug....

Thanks

Hi Everybody, my tests are going on...

I exported two jpegs, one with RedCine on Vista (v 3.15) and the other one with RedCine on Mac (v 3.18) with QT 7.6

The two RedCine had the same settings (ISO, WB, Tint and Saturation...)

Here's the result:

How is it possible?!

Thanks

Miki

I apologize!!!! On Vista RedCine gamma space was: Rec709!!!

I'm sorry!!

BUT, I'd like to use in Final Cut, QT proxies with ISO, WB and Gamma space I want. How can I do it? If I open the files with ClipFinder I have RedSpace gamma, how can I change it?

Thanks

not a mac user ... but from what i recall from JJ posting ( way back in 2007 ) isn't there a setting on the MAc where you change the QT gamma from 1.8 to 2.2 ??

After an entire day spent between RedCine on Vista and Mac, finally I understood my problem is the quicktime gamma!!!

Infact if I open a clip with RedCine on Vista or Mac the exported results are the same!

BUT, if I open a clip with RedCine (on Mac) and then the same with quicktime (using proxies) the color is different....

So how can I use proxies in FCP with the original color gamma, like in RedCine??

Here some esample...

Huscar, have you already done this?

Also, in the FCP Log and Transfer window you have an option to choose which metadata settings you want to use on the import.
