Just for fun -

So, you get your RED ONE. Power that baby up - play with the menu ... do a test or two. Then what ...?

Time to shoot something.

What will your first RED ONE shoot be?

Jason Francois
01-10-2007, 07:38 PM
probably not much since I'll be still reeling from putting out $30k or so to get going.

I might involve myself in a couple of other people's project that might want to step up to RED.

probably my carpet, as I switch it on :D

... but I wish to take it in to the space (Space Shuttle) and take footage of Earth, atmosphere and all that wonderfull thing there etc. in 4K, then watch it on 4K projector with my friends and be stoked with every captured detail

After the requisite testing, playing, pushing buttons and ogling. I'm hoping to have a short film to shoot assuming my writer comes though and there's any money left over. But since there wont be money left over, it'll be a guerilla shoot on the weekends here in Hollywood.

I'm planning an hommage to the Lumiere brothers famous train arrival shot. In Poland, they have a few very old humungus (that's very huge) locomotives still running regular lines. A couple friends of mine went there last year and brought back some beautiful photographs. The scenery is incredible and those trains are impressive. The wheels are the height of a man. It'll make for some beautiful images. It may not be the first thing I shoot, there will definitly be some testing first, then it depends of when I get it. This shoot is planned fot the fall. If I get the camera much earlier, I'll shoot some other stuff. I'm also planning a short maybe during the summer or in the fall at the latest, so we'll see when it's there.

Cheers,
Damien

Megan, my daughter. And the trees in the garden. These are the trees that show horrible macroblocking on crappy HDV cameras. They'll look lovely under REDCODE.

Once I get kitted out to dunk RED I'm hoping that I'll be able to enounter a Giant Manta Ray. I've dived over the years, having lived in Micronesia for the past 5, many hundreds of times with these incredible animals. Their fluidity and sheer grace should look fantastic coming from RED. If I only had the chance to do it all in 4K from the start, but that time will come.

Cheers,

if i do find out someone is shooting porn with a red.. im gunna find them.. rubberband snap their nuts and take their camera and let it shoot something that it was designed to shoot.

to me, shooting porn with red is like some old dude with no clue in the world.. on vacation with his family and using a hvx for the family video.. just some rich bitch who threw all his cash out on the table for the "best" camera and ends up shooting the lowest quality anyways.

Post that footage as soon as it happens...dont wait she destroys the camera...SAVE THE DATA !!!! ...if you're still alive...

And why not? I shot my kids first seeing what Santa brought them this year in 720p60. Next year it will (hopefully) be in 4K, but I don't know how long it will take for my reservation # to come up.

But realistically, my first RED shoot will also be the wifte bitching at me and of the kids, dogs and cat. Then if the snow is falling and it's the right time of year, I'll head up to the slopes and see how many snowboarders I can shoot (er.. with the camera) as they eat it hard on the rails at the terrain park. If I get my RED during warm weather, I'll try a skate park or try for some wildlife and scenery up in the mountains. I'll see what I can line up in advance too... If I've got a TV commercial or something lined up, I'll switch over to using RED instead of the HVX if all things work out.

You know what Jeff ?

I bought my first video camera when (because) my daughter was born.
I wanted to have images from his youth.

I still have these VHS in MINT condition, and it is great ! They're very important to me.
...and now, she's 22 years old, and i make a living of video production.

I still use my camera quite often for my familly.
It is just ...the most important moments. so why not in 4K !

OH ! forgot,...and it is one of the best way to test a camera by the way.

(people who have seen Robot Chicken will get that joke)

But seriously, I plan on filming a short and/or perhaps start on my first documentary with the RED once I get it, which I figure will be in the late June/early July range.

Now, that's what I "plan" to do. More than likely the first thing I go to film will be Las Vegas from the top of the mountain behind my house. You know, just to have fun and see how much resolution 4K is going to give me from then on. :)

Definitely a great night/twilight shot of the Strip/Downtown from the mouth of the canyon leading up to RED Rock - or of the Strip/Downtown at night/dawn from the flank of Sunrise Mountain.

I lived in Las Vegas (Summerlin) from 2002-2004 and shot a ton of Vegas b-roll and stock footage. Now I have to re-shoot all of it in 4k/24fps REDCODE RAW!

Shooting your kids in 4K is a good idea. I'm not a camera operator by trade, but the time I've spent with an FX1 shooting my kids means I'm much, much better at being a camera operator when I have to be. I am so much better at following a subject, predicting the frame, getting the focus right at speed, making the most of available (low)light. It's the only practice I get. So, although I won't be the primary operator of my RED One (because I'll hand it to my DP), I'm going to spend a lot of time shooting my kids in 4K. I'll get to know the camera inside out, and test the workflow over and over again before we go out on a pro shoot. I probably won't finish in 4K...

Hey I agree... I've got my Sony HC3 for home movies, kids, etc.. But I still plan on using RED with a bunch of this stuff initially just to get it all figured out.

My first RED shoot will probably be the backyard, kids, dogs. Then I'll take it to the mountains and go for scenery and wildlife. After that, who knows? I've got a short film I'd like to do pretty soon after getting the camera too.

Hi Offhollywood,

because you asked: I have being working for some time now on my autobiography story devided in to 5 movies, so the first project for me will be to shoot part one of this series, produce by KETCHFRAME, I intend to cowrite, coproduce, codirect and costar in it.

I already have absurd pretences as far as who I like to co-write/co-produce/co-direct and costar with, my list is short,

Peter Jackson, my choice for co-writer/co-producer/co-director.

Meal Gibson, my choice for co-writer/co-producer/co-director/co-star.

Jim Jannard, my choice for co-writer/executiveproducer.

Madelein Stowe, my choice to costar to play my mother before she died.

David Caruso, my choice of co-star to play my mother's brother.

Viggo Mortensen, my choice of co-star to play special opps. director.

Orlando Bloom, my choice of co-star to play the under cover field agent.

and the list those go on and on.

Yes I already know that I only will have 3 Red cameras some gear and very little money with less expirience then money, but movie making for me is about storytelling and I Am very very good at that, I find all the great people in the industry to work in the project and I will not have to warry about nothing, just tell people my vision and waht the and resolt I need to look like, not easy but not impossible!!!

Dreaming is good, no, dreaming is very good, but if you do not try to make it come true it remains just a dream.

Ciao,

I wouldn't buy a RED purely to shoot the kids. But it's a good way to get to know the camera. I'm buying my RED for a couple of feature films. But the kids will help me test everything out, long before I have a mass of cast and crew looking over my shoulder, wondering whether it's going to work.

Maybe we ought to do a global competition, whereby each country that enters has to produce a feature length movie in a week between all the RedOne owners there. My first RED shoot is going to be the feature film "Boys of Autumn". I expect to begin principal cinematography in October depending on delivery of my RED. The film is about the real life account of a college student who took up Crystal Meth as a way of coping with his younger brother's suicide, and as a result his world got thrown upside down, and he struggled with his addiction, finally succumbing to it. The site for the film will be going up in the next little while. www.boysofautumnmovie.com

My first RED shoot could happen as soon as the week after NAB, depending on RED's delivery schedule of #8. What will it be? There are stunning images all around where I live - the California Central Coast. Me and #8 are going to hike around Big Sur together shooting in 4k REDCODE RAW @ 24fps the following stock footage: wide panoramas of the rugged coastline, sunsets over crashing surf, 4,000 pound elephant seals fighting, and gray whales with calves migrating north. I'll also do some 4k REDCODE RAW @ 24fps wine country/fine dining stock footage: vineyards, wine pouring into glasses, sizzling food, etc. I'll also shoot some action sports stock footage of surfing and kiteboarding in 2k REDCODE RAW @ 60fps. It will probably only take two days to shoot all of this...

After that? A D-cinema feature and several HDTV series and specials in development for 2007-08...more news on those projects soon...

I've started wearing disguises in public. It's working like a charm. This whole reduser ninja spy thing is a bit scary - I painted a giant DELTA on the side of my private jet - so, they are NOT going to spot me sneaking off to shoot tests with ....

Reliable sources have verified Gibby's disguise for avoiding reduser detection in the field. "The disguise also allows an undetectable presence while filming in the wild," said the reliable source anonymously.

So if you see a 6' version of one of these on the CA central coast not carrying a basket of brightly colored eggs then you've found RED #8:

Comrades Unite! We must shoot a commercial for the REDs!

haha seriously though I don't know what we would do to advertise the red except:

White text on black:

- "In a world where 4k was expensive."
- "RED"
-- pause --
- "Actually that's it."
- "Oh yeah here's some footage"
-- Roll Red Footage
- "See pretty."

I thought this would be a fun topic to start, and get an idea of the multitude of possibilities ... I want someone out there to say "geothermal observation" :) that would be awesome.

I'll start off by saying I want to shoot my first feature film-- 3-cam shoot, shooting on Red drives.

Hope this thread doesn't die off right away!

haha, nice Red guy.

Well I wish I could say I'd be shooting some hugely ambitious project, but that's not true. If I had to guess I'd say we'll be using it on Persian music videos most likely, so the first thing would either be a music video or perhaps we'd shoot a short to test the camera first and just have some fun, basically, no pressure, just doing work for ourselves to play around with the new tools. I can say for sure I'll be shooting a lot of stuff with it, even if it's just random stuff for fun, because having that kind of tool at my disposal whenever I want, I can't really leave it sitting around and feel good about myself. ;)

I do have a feature planned for January 2009, though. That is not definite, because I need to develop my script, but I have the location, which is a big part of this particular project, and I think I have a few contacts for a DP, although it's always good to know more DPs. Especially considering that with this low-budget of a project ($50,000 or less, not including location and tools, which I consider "free" since they are mine), basically to be honest the only person who is going to be paid well is the DP. I just don't believe you can make a good looking movie without a professional, very good DP, but I do believe I can pull it off with good unknown actors and the rest of the crew can have minimum experience, so long as I have the time to prep them for several weeks before. It's an investment of time on my part, but I'd rather do that than pay professionals a lot of money, I just don't have the cash to use on this first project. The RED should be a great tool, though, I believe strongly in the story and am really excited about it, but I don't want the production quality to ruin something that in my head is really strong. I think it has solid commercial projects, probably the straight-to-DVD market, but that is fine by me.

I live in the shadows of the Malvern Hills where the composer Elgar found inspiration for much of his music. It is wonderful rolling countryside so I will be shooting a lot of lush green fields, hills and woodlands. I want to see what the camera will make of it all.

I am writing a script for a feature which I have planned for several years but it probably won't be ready for development until the end of 2008 which gives me a chance to get used to the camera and setup a stable post production workflow with FCP.

Exciting days!

I want to be carefull and not overhype the camera to clients. When the client says how can you charge me 35mm rates based on an equipment system with a much lower price? Ahhh....pause...Ahhh. When Red comes up to speed and more and more Red cameras are saturating the market it will come down to the basics. How good of shooter are you, how good of DP do you have, Do you have a good gaffer? The one thing I've learned from high def, it magnifies both the beauty and the mistakes.

RED 4k CUBA

My wife is From Havana Cuba and just recently moved here. We have been developing a feature that I would like to shoot at least 60% (if not 100%) on location in Cuba. Being that I am a North American I will probably need to link up with the Red community across the pond to stay under the radar.

We have spent the last few years down in Havana and around the country and if you dont know already, its an extraordinary place. The only way I could get away shooting my last short film down there was Guerilla style with a DVX100, this allowed me to avoid the red tape and politics of a big crew etc.

Now my dream of returning to Cuba and shoot a feature in the same manner is at arms length. If all goes well, there will be another revolution to hit the shores of Cuba.

Thank you RED!

Best

Sounds Like fun Haskell. 60% of my first RED feature "Yard" will be shot 90 miles away ... to the south in Jamaica.
The other 40% will be shot in Toronto.

if i do find out someone is shooting porn with a red.. im gunna find them.. rubberband snap their nuts and take their camera and let it shoot something that it was designed to shoot.

to me, shooting porn with red is like some old dude with no clue in the world.. on vacation with his family and using a hvx for the family video.. just some rich bitch who threw all his cash out on the table for the "best" camera and ends up shooting the lowest quality anyways.

I just know there will arise a porn site with a name like PORN4K or HighResRedPorn.com or something crazy like that. ;)

With the first Red delivery schedule I was looking at getting my camera in the fall so I had a project in mind to film... but seeing as how my locations would be under several feet of snow by November I'm gonna take a pass on that.

There are two other projects that would both be shot entirely on sets so they could be a go if I can wrangle up the funds. One would be a feature set in 2050 with a group of people trying to transport nuclear fuel through a Vancouver that is buried under several hundred meters of glacial ice... the other would take place in 2008 on board the first civilian space mission to rendezvous with an earth grazing asteroid.

Barring that, I'll be trying to schedule a late spring shoot for the original feature I had planned on.

I have a friend who works on all the m.night shamalan movies and am going to
try to get him to test with me. m.night is a really down to earth guy an hopefully will have the time.

if not that, scenics of the city of brotherly love.

or porn.

Umm, if you say so. I've heard he's one of the most arrogant directors around, the guy thought he could act in his last movie, which was one of the biggest disasters imaginable, and his movies keep getting worse with every entry. I think the guy is unbearable personally. I don't think there's many people in Hollywood I hate more than M. Night Shyamalan, I have no respect for the guy. He makes one great movie and thinks he's the best show in town, and has the right to criticize other great filmmakers publicly without basis. I've heard nothing but bad things about him.

But, of course, you have personal experience to back up what you've "heard" to justify publicly bashing a man that many would consider to be a coworker or a friend... yes?

I've heard this from other professionals in person, yes, whether they were just jealous or something, who knows, but I have no trouble bashing someone with that big of an ego. I appreciate some of his work, too, I like both Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, but I think the guy's ego has shot out of control with Lady in the Water. I shouldn't say I hate the dude, I mean maybe he's a cool guy if you get to know him, but some of the comments he has made have really rubbed me the wrong way and are unacceptable from a guy who has vastly less talent than the people he is criticizing in public. It's one thing to say something about another filmmaker to a friend, or to a few guys you know, etc., but when the media asks you about something and you deliberately burn a fellow filmmaker who is about 100 times more talented than you are, that's pretty low to me.

JLB, What does that have to do with testing a camera? No one asked for personality assessments. Back on topic please.

Jeff Kilgroe
06-24-2007, 12:34 AM
Yeah, I at least try to meet someone for myself before I make such harsh statements. Anyway, let's see if I can steer this back on topic.

I still plan to shoot just about anything I can point the camera at initially. I had a concept for a short, but it's turning into more of a feature and I'm going to go for it as soon as I can get all the pieces together. I have the location and September/October of 2008 look promising for that. I'll probably do a couple shorts and shoot for stock and anything else I can think of in the mean time. Oh, and my typical corporate type stuff. I can't wait to see how RED performs for my next shareholder report video. I may just hold onto the HVX for that stuff...

Jonathan L. Bowen

Acehole -- simple. He shouldn't be allowed to test the camera, or for that matter ever even hold it, because he's unworthy of something so great as the RED. ;)

2008 is going to be a great year for independent filmmaking, for sure, it seems like from reading this thread and others that many, many people here have features planned, and I'm guessing most are in the low-budget category of $500,000 or less, sometimes even ultra-low-budget like $50,000 or less. I know that's where I stand. My first film will be with my own funds, something that is not recommendable in this market, but I feel that filmmaking is a lot like poker in the sense that you should never be gambling more than you are comfortable with losing. I know I won't lose all $50,000, because worst case scenario I put the darn thing on DVD for $1.29 per packaged DVD (replication is so inexpensive now days) and then sell it at genre conventions, online, etc. Worst case scenario I'd probably lose a good chunk of my time and maybe $30,000, and if that is what happened, eh, was worth the risk. But I feel that won't be the case.

I'll be jumping into my first feature. Of the seven feature scripts I've written to date, none are low-budget enough for what I can afford to produce myself, so I'm writing a comedy set in a few rooms that will be the first one out the door. I was hoping to knock out a feature before the end of the year on my PD170, for practice, but I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of time and money to produce a product on an inferior medium. So the first flick may be a bit shaky, but I pick things up fairly quickly. And I'll definitely have a pro DP on the project. Any Hollywood-based pros available for a gig in early 2008?
