Nice. The more 4k cameras, the better. Hopefully these large Japanese companies will speed these through development and into production ASAP. If they do, we'll have one man to thank for it. Not only that, but they will not be able to overcharge for their cameras, since Jim has priced his so low. :gun:

I have no doubt that Sony, JVC, Panasonic, etc.. will all have 4K cameras within the next couple years. But will they be as cool and as affordable as RED?

The thing is, they are going to have a very, very tough time overpricing their 4K cameras, because if they go too high, people will simply buy REDs. Without Jim, though, you can bet your ass they would have tried to charge exorbitant amounts for 4K cameras. These are the same people who haven't even been able to put together a decent 1080p camera for a decent price.

I think even if they charge less than Red, people should ignore the Japanese 4k cameras. Those companies have been fleecing the market for years, and consumers should completely boycott their products as protest against corporate greed. Maybe by stewing in a total vacuum of financial loss for a few years those corporations will learn to be more giving in the future.

thats gunna be tough to get people to follow.
Im getting the red no doubt! but if i wasnt and this was all in a few years from now.. and one of these companies came out with a camera with similar specs for less.. id buy the lesser version. I personally dont care about companies and boycotting to prove a point. My ultimate goal is to get the gear that will leave me with more cash in my pocket. ya know?
But the good news is.. im pretty sure no one can beat RED

The fleecing is only really true in the professional-level gear. The fact that Canon has a 1080p camera out on the market now for $1,000 is evidence that the fleecing is only selective. HVX and similar prosumer cameras are also reasonably priced.
the thing that RED is going to do is to prevent these companies from trying to charge 60 or 70 grand for their 4K cameras.

Looks a little like the JVC KY-2000 I had back in High School! :)
