Accessories that carry over

Of all the Red accessories, which ones carry over to Epic? It's probably simpler to list off the ones that DONT carry over.

It seems to me...
-Red baseplate & dovetail
-Upper mounts

What about side handles? I love those things, I wonder if the height from upper to lower rods on Epic will be the same?

I think the Focus hook wouldn't also (I know that's fairly obvoius), but I remember someone saying that the ET baseplates would all work, although they may require a small riser to adjust fo the height.

In my opinion, the accessories that will just barely work or work with modification would probably be better suited for replacement. That's not to say that somebody shouldn't hang onto it and use it to save money until a better option comes out... but just to say that a better option will almost certainly come out. I think the base plates are a perfect example of this. Sure it'll work [with the aforementioned riser block]... but it'll just bugger up the ergonomics of the thing. I doubt it'll be long before there's a better option.

My point is neither here nor there in this thread, I suppose... just popped into my head while reading and visualizing how to rig this camera.

Except one of the selling points of the ET Hybrid is that it'll be Epic/Scarlet compliant, thus a big reason to buy it now. And since ET and Red are cosy, i'd expect it to be a worthwhile baseplate

Nick, the Arri 235 and 416 both use riser blocks between their base plates and the camera body. They also happen to be the most comfortable handheld cameras Arri makes.

A higher lens mount is exactly the problem RED's redesign has avoided.

It makes me feel better to think of Red's ergonomic shortcomings as a necessary side effect to the cameras otherwise incredible cost / performance ratio. Kryptonite to Superman - that kind of problem.

I have no problem with riser plates, as long as they conform to some standard, be it Reds,or Arri's. Starting over again would be annoying to anyone with 3 or 4 expensive base plates sitting around. My point was that rather than make a minor design tweek of 3mm and conform to a long standing industry standard, they just designed the thing as though it would not have to work with tons of existing stuff.

Matt, I have a machine shop. My Ac is modding an Arri base plate to work with Red as we speak ;-)

There's no such thing as a standard riser plate. That's the point of a riser plate... to make something conform to a standard.

I believe the current plan is the addition on a small shim plate between the existing bridgeplate and the camera. So the current accessories remain compatible.

You may have a point. I have long standing grumpiness with the base plate/Red issue since when I called them and asked if my newly ordered Red was compatible with an Arri base plate (way back when) I was told, absolutely yes, by some one at Red who was poorly informed.

I guess I'm saying, as long as the Epic goes on my base plates be it with or without a riser block, I'm happy. If there is yet another non compatible goofy thing I have to buy I'm gonna be grumpy ;-)

Spacers seem to me like a non issue.

Weather we can mount our still primes IE CanonEOS on Birger for continued smart mount use is a truly BIG Sensor deal on FF
