35mm adapter, supports EVF...

Not much info on it. I couldn't find anything besides this: http://prolost.blogspot.com/2007/06/redrock-gets-it.html

Reminded me of RED-GRIP and RED-RAIL a bit.

I want one.

I saw this on prolost as well. I'm hoping they package the thing complete as a deal. looks sick

How much would this set up cost, not including the camera?

Hi all

I guess things make the rounds :)

This was a concept rig we showed at Cinegear to show that a 35mm lens adapter could be a compact, handheld system, and not limited to just tripod and dolly shots. Also,we wanted to give a flavor of Redrock gear and how it will evolve into the future

My god, that looks awesome. Anyone have any idea about the price? The camera only costs a grand.

Man, even with that tiny HV20 on there, it looks impressive.

That's a great looking shoulder rig, for other camera's as well.

Too bad it's not available yet.

Brian, perfect lens for that setup would be the Nikon 17-35 2.8. when are you going to add hard stops to your focus rings so that we can use that lens? Take a look at the hard stops on Zacuto's zip gears... I prefer yours because they are larger and seem like they would compensate for the short focus throw better. Looking forward to someone solving that problem because the 17-35 is nigh-unusable IMHO without hard stops and an expanded focus throw. Or is your answer your upcoming remote follow focus?

Cheers

Hey Bruce, quick question for you here. If I buy the HV20 and want to use it this summer to shoot some outdoor landscape and nature stuff, is there any type of simple grad NDs or polarizer filters I can somehow get onto the HV20? I won't need an adapter because this will be deep-focus stuff. A grad ND would be super useful for me on an HV20.

The hard stops are coming - you are absolutely right about the RR lens gears - the larger gearing is specifically designed to give you more finesse and greater control over still lenses.

Since this is a "concept rig" I guess we'll have to wait and see about the overall cost. I agree though it would be nice to see a package deal.

You could cheat the focus throw problem a bit by using either a larger lens gear (like those ones with the stand off posts) OR a smaller gear on the follow focus unit. This would not expand the focus travel on the lens, but it would help at the knob on the FF unit. Hard stops should be easy to incorperate either on the lens ring gear or at the follow focus knob.

Sorry for this.
It is HV20, but from very unusual angle.
I never noticed those waves on the other side that usualy hide behind strap.

it was mounted upside down.. probably to counter the flipped image thing.. and besides.. the cam is so small and basically acting just as a sensor and recorder.. the real shit is the RRM FF and VF. I want this set up.. Who wants to buy a dvx100A?

Buy a cheap clip-on mattebox such as the Formatt fm-500 and some 4x4 grad filters.

You can always take the top flag off to decrease weight as well.

You could go with Lee, HiTech or Cokin square filter systems for slrs.
Any of them would be plenty big enough to cover the HV20 lens, and fit in simple screw on holders. If you go for the Hitech or Lee filters they come in 4" sizes that should be usable in 4x4 matteboxes too.

I second the above answers! I have a 43mm screw-on pola but for grads you'd want a simple lightweight filter system (eg 4x4 or SLR system). I have used those before (on DV projects, even!). Helps fix latitude issues too. Now I am going for bigger filter sizes than that just because I am a cheapskate (don't want to buy two sizes) and because I am doing the 35mm adapter thing.

This is a cool rig and would give an incredible advantage to shooting the hv20 but sooner than later would be sweet. If you decide not to produce, How much do you want for the Proto-type. I need a target # to shoot for!
Thanks.

I like how it's upside down, but how do you control manual exposure without an assistant?

Just thinking aloud with cameras like the V1U and XH-A1.

Sweet setup, btw!

There are some cheap copy matte boxes from India on ebay if you want to go that way, about $300 with rods down to $100 for a simple screw on.

Cokin filters are the cheapest, but the NDs are not very neutral.
HiTechs seem OK, and go for about $50 each in the UK.

hehe, the problem with the HV20 is that it's so damn cheap, every accessory you buy for it costs more than the camera itself! :)

once i get the camera maybe you guys would be willing to point me to the specific matte box, rails and adapters i am going to need?

what about checking playback in the field on this camera? could I hook it up to a laptop with a 1080p screen? what are the monitoring options?

Doesn't sound like you'd really need it then. Shoulder mount for rail support, rail for adapter and lens support. If you don't need the lens then you don't need the adapter, no need for a rail if you don't need an adapter or no need for a shoulder mount if you don't need a rail.

And an adapter ring which will screw onto the front end of the HV20's 43mm front diameter.......

Bottom bottom end would be a Cokin P system. maybe $25 for the holder and adaptor ring and then filters at about $25 each. Those are all 84mm filters, so not going to be able to move them to a 4x4 mattebox.

Cokin Z system uses 100mm filters, should likely be usable in a 4x4... although they are kinda thin so a filter holder would make it easier.

From my Sony FX1 experience, the Cokin ND (grey) filters are Ok individually, but any combination of 2 or more NDs and there is a terrible colour cast.
Hitech, Singh-Ray and Lee filters (going up the price scale) have much better feedback on those issues.

Either way with those there would be no flagging, so you'd have to look at a little flag on an arm or something like that and the filters stay in the open on all sides, more vulnerable to dirt and spray.

I have a Formatt mattebox too, and it's Ok, although I'm not wildly in love with it. It will seem HUGE when it is attached to an HV20 though.... it is pretty wide even on the FX1.

I've just got a hv20 for my holidays and want to get a 43mm to nikon 35mm adaptor so I can bolt on all my old stills lenses. Can't seem to find anything at b&h, google etc and just wondered if anyone could help me out.

It's a little more complex of an adapter than you might be thinking.
If you go to Redrock (http://www.redrockmicro.com/micro35.html) (US) or SGpro (http://www.sgpro.co.uk/) (UK) you'll see what's involved.
Both those sites have user forums too.

Isn't that the purpose of the brevice adapter at cinevate.com? I believe it is around $1200.00.
I think that they are also in development of a similar system for the hv20 ff and all, but the red rock looks a little more ergonomically inspired and compact.

Correct me If I'm wrong or if this isn't what your looking for.

Good luck

lol, sorry.

Fall off? No way, it's quite the rugged little aluminum beast.

Very strong, dependable, pretty lightweight, a good deal for the money.

Aren't you in CA? If you are, go down to EVS and try one out.

Coming, coming! I've lent out most of it to my friend Matt Garrett (the guy with the HVX200 and SGpro that I did some 35mm adapter tests with) for a shoot.

Saving up for a mattebox for it ;)
