Hello,

I am new to the RED camera and therefore am clearly missing something fundamental:

I shot footage using the following settings: Timebase of 23.97 FPS, Frame Rate of 24 FPS, Resolution of 4K @ 16:9. The mag was formatted to these specifications and the footage recorded. When played back through the camera, everything worked fine, however, when the files were transferred to the Mac and viewed, the footage looked 'sped up' or slightly out of sync and faster.

Can anyone help clarify why this might be the case?

Thank you all in advance.

Bert

Sounds like you unintentionally "undercranked" the footage. If the "23.97" time base you posted was actually 29.97 time base, then you shot a Varizpeed frame rate of 24fps as you posted, then that could account for your up-speed playback of the footage. The footage will want to playback at 29.97, but you only shot 24 fps, thus the footage play faster on the timeline.

Check your menus for setup of the camera and you will probably find that the project frame rate you setup is actually 29.97, not "23.97".

Also, check your Timeline settings on the Mac (if you are playing back using Final Cut). Perhaps you set the Camera settings properly, but the FCP Timeline was set for 29.97.

Usually, if you are dragging and dropping a clip into a new Sequence, it will ask you to inherit the properties from the source clip, however, this can be declined in the requester window.

Thank you both for your advice! I will take a look at all my settings and see where I might have gone wrong.
