I bought a EOS to F mount adapter today. It was $60 and fits onto the Nikon lens before you stick it onto the Canon. It's sort of a piece of crap. There is lots of lens play and it feels like it will break within a month.

Anyone know of anything better out there to order online?

Thanks

How about Novoflex?

Do you know if that installs directly into the EOS body or does the ring have to be attached to the lens beforehand?

Hi Rick,
I've had some experience with these. A customer of mine bought a fancy one with focus confirm chip and it was a very tight so I fixed it for him. I got a $10 one off ebay and it fit much better off the bat. When we looked at them they looked identical- it seemed that the fancy one was from the same source only with the chip/contacts glued in.

I believe on the lens. Here's a link to it on Adorama.

Jacek,

The $10 one bought off ebay. Did that have any lens play?

I'm reading some photo forums and realizing that the $200+ models are just as good as the $10+ models.. Funny

Hi Rick,
No it didn't and, as the matter of fact he ended up using it on his 5d.
It is a hit and miss I'm sure...

Now that I'm writing this I realized I never got it back.. Bastard!!!!!

I think I bought the Gadget Infinity AF confirm from ebay for like 40 bucks. It seems to work fine. I also bought the $50 one from Adorama recently, but have not tried it yet.

I think the best thing to do is buy one adapter for each Nikon lens, then leave it on. Maybe do some modifications to make it fit really nicely (use shims perhaps), then leave it.

Tom, does your adapter have play?

AF Confirm means you can use autofocus for your Nikon lenses then?

Thanks

As Tom says, get one for each lens (I just leave it on each lens); at a few £/$ each it's not going to break the bank.

No significant play on mount fit (I purchased 4 on eBay); no AF control, totally manual. Must mount on lens first.
Only play is if you hit end of focus and keep going, one mount allows lens to move a very small amount, but in normal focus pulls no movement (BTW : had the same amount of play on the DU / Red Nikon mount ie : locating pin to lens with not enough friction in the mount to stop the movement)

Had these for years and cannot track / find the make ... sorry :( but remember paying something like £14 each.

What's the AF Confirm adapters I'm seeing then? What do they do?

I fried a EOS camera with one of those stupid cheap adapters from Ebay. beware

Can you elaborate on how exactly you fried the camera? The adapter is strictly mechanical and has no electronic connectors so it would be pretty hard to fry someting-unless a frying pan got involved.....:tt2:

I bought this one for $27.95 and it's awesome. No play, in fact, so little play that it can be a bit tough to get the lenses off (not too tough, I just have to really intend to turn the lens). http://www.fotodiox.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=164

That looks like the exact same one Adorama sells for like $50.

That looks cool Shawn. I ordered one from ebay last night but thinking about canceling and just going with this one since you confirmed no play..

just put it on again. There is a TINY bit of L-R play, i'm talking maybe a mm or two, but ONLY if you grab the lens firmly and twist, using the focus or iris wont budge an inch. It's so minor that when you press the lens release on the Canon and twist just the lens, the mount comes off with it

I was thinking about getting something like this for my 40D so I can use those Zeiss ZF lenses I have on that body and maybe a 5D2, when I get one.

Do you have play when you pull the lens up and down, vertical?

That's where I'm seeing the most amount of play with this adapter.

Still don't understand why anyone would spend $270 for the Novoflex adapter..

None that I can detect, and I just tried again. ANd on my post when I said L-R play, I only meant that if you FIRMLY grab the lens body (not the focus or iris) and twist it as if you were going to take the lens off (but forgot to push lens release) it will budge like a mm or two, but absolutely no up down or side to side play of the lens itself, it remains flush very well. $27.95? best.adaptor.ever

Niiice

Just out of curiosity, are you testing with a heavy lens like the 17-35?

(sigh) putting it back on. I was testing with a 50mm prime. I'll test with my biggest nikon, the 200mm prime

okay. got the 200mm on there, rotated the barrel out (for focus) then firmly gripped the body and the very edge of the lens, so I had a 6" moment arm to gently try to get play. I was able to get the SLIGHTEST perception of movement, but I would not classify it as "play" at all, might have been the lens itself or the metal bending. My opinion is that its rock solid. My 200mm is older and the focus is pretty stiff, so I did get minor amount of the L-R mount twist play

As long as they havent changed their process since I bought (~2 years ago), its a no-brainer for under $30

Thanks Shawn. I don't think it's a weight issue with my adapter. I just put on my lightest Nikkor and there is all kinds of play. I'll try out the model you bought.

Alright, I'm confused a little, so a quick question: with these adapters, you still need a Nikon non-G where you can still manually control the iris, right? Or is there some method to adjust the f-stop on a GDX lens? Thanks.
Peace,

-Harry

I wonder what makes the PRO version of the Fotofiox more expensive than the regular $30 version.

Still don't understand why anyone would spend $270 for the Novoflex adapter..

Two possibilities, and I am not speaking from experience because I have never used one, let alone own one.

1. It's carried by the big resellers, B&H, Zacuto, etc. Not that this means much in terms of comparing it against the cheaper models. But people probably look to these places first if they don't want to do a lot of research.

2. Perhaps the tolerances are better, or the build quality is more consistent.

Otherwise, if neither of these are true and the cheaper ones are working as well, then it's a no brainer to go with the cheaper ones.

By the way, you guys are tempting me to want to buy the 5D and use my Nikon glass with it, but fortunately I have so many other things that need purchasing, I'll probably let that temptation fizzle. :-)

I ended up ordering a Fotodiox Pro Version.. I'll report back with results.. They sold me on the pro, saying how it's a better finish and manufacturing process, designed to withhold multiple lens changes and use.. Could be B.S. I spent 3 hours last night sifting through lens mount data. There really isn't a consensus out there on them. Everyone said the Novoflex and Cameraquest models weren't worth the $200+. I'm too scared to order one from China and Adorama is just repackaging Fotodiox adapters anyway..

For $27.95 you should have bought both :-). bring it up to Portland with you in July and that way we can compare them side-by-side!

I stuck a piece of business card paper between the crappy mount I have now and the Nikon lens. It's pretty decent now.. If the PRO mount is this snug, then I'll just order a bunch of $10 adapters and fix them on for good.

See you in Portland man! Can't wait!
