Hey,

I finally found some more time to shoot demo footage with my Andromeda. This clip is about 5MB, so not too bad a download. I color corrected it with a sleight haze in the highlights to give it that warm nostalgic look, its subtle, but adds a nice softening effect to the highlights.

EDIT:

Its the Sorenson 3 codec by the way... and I'll post an uncorrected clip when I can get it rendered.

NEW CLIP:

Here's another clip, different look. It's only about 4MB. No highlight blur, and this has more motion in it.....

As soon as I get my Red, my HVX junker will become a Hydra.

Hi Chris,

What is this Andromeda? When I google the word all I seem to find is stuff about a TV show, Greek Mythology or a place far far away.
Nice image though. Was it shot thru one of those 35mm lens adapters? It has that soft diffused look they all seem to produce.

No its stock lens. The softness is created by some After Effects tricks I developed on my own. I basically isolate the highlights and then put a blur on them. I don't use it all the time, but in this case, I though it added a nice touch to the color scheme used.

Andromeda is an uncompressed HD camera:

I'm outputting another clip without any highlight diffusion.

Thanks!

WOW!
9.5 stops form that little camcorder. Kind of like RED Lite!

Thanks for the link

Chuck, read into the Hydra, it's the modded HVX200 version of Andromeda.

I think it'll make for a great Red crash cam.

Hi Alexander,

Hmmmmmmmm Crash Camera
They don't have any info on the Hydra up yet at the site Chris listed but I'll poke around and see if I find some. I watched the clip called "Angsterfullt" by Matthew Bennett, the close ups are pretty amazing. It also got me looking over my shoulder. lol

Looks nice. Some mosquito noise in both clips. Also some nasty edge contrast artifacts when the pencil holder moves in the second clip. That could all be due to the compression though. How does it compare to the uncompressed footage?

I'm thinking of turning my HVX into a Hydra. But I'm also thinking it may be better to just sell it and be done with it altogether.

Chris, when are you going to start doing projects with this thing?

Yeah, the noise and edge stuff is compression stuff. The clip is normally like 300 MB at full quality, this is like 4MB.... LOL.

Potentially this August. I have a pending action film in Baltimore that will shoot for like 15 days. I'm also talking with another lower budget HVX200 action film shooting in November. I may end up being their visual effects DP :)

That does not look bad, a touch soft. Isn't this a DVX100
that you hook up to a computer? That is my big hang-up
with those systems. Tethered to a computer does not
sound like a great idea.

Its a small mac mini with a touch screen, not big at all. Pretty soon I'll have it in a shoulder mount design, just like a dock able betacam :) uisng an anton bauer battery system. It's only limited to what you can dream up and actually create. Its soft because of the highlight blur, did you look at the first frame of the second clip I added? Thats as nice as HVX200, and without all the usual compression.

I've always been impressed by the Andromeda stuff and I can't wait to see how the Hydra performs.
