Is this tent for keeping ambient light off the monitor screen?

Yep. Or for small exclusive cocktail parties.

I also agree that it's kinda expensive... But, I'm currently unaware of any cheaper options. I'd be tempted to try a "lineman's tent" -- exactly the same thing, but sold through contractor supply places. The tents you see utility / telco workers using in the field. I'd do that and coat the inside of the tent with a black epoxy-based paint. I bet it would work just as good and cost less than $300.

Anyone find any "lineman's tents" for sale online?

chuck colburn

Finner,

They are sometimes refered to as shelters. Might find something that way.

Jeff Kilgroe

Yes also called shelters.. I guess I'm used to "lineman's tent" because that's what most of the Xcel Energy and Qwest guys call them. Grainger supply has them, but I couldn't find them in their online catalog. You can also take a look at various outdoor and camping suppliers.

Cabela's has this one (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0031110&type=pod&cmCat=cat20087_feat) that might be a real possibility. It's intended for setting up a campsite shower, but it has a lot of good things going for it. It's light, quick to set up, good ventilation with removeable canopy top, places to hang things and you could probably get this thing and do necessary modifications to it all for less than $250 plus your time. It might be a bit small though.

My local welding supply shop stocks these (http://www.envirosafetyproducts.com/product/confined_space_equipment_work_tent_9403-66) and this one is by far my favorite. Figure $260 + shipping/tax though. But it's got plenty of room and very compact, weighs nothing. It has a ventilation port on the back side, which is perfect for hooking up an external blower or AC unit so it doesn't get too stuffy inside. This link I pulled up I can't comment on, I don't know anything about this dealer, but they look OK.

way too expensive, IMO.

As for sealing out light from the inside, I mentioned epoxy paint because once it cures, it's very rubbery and flexible. There might be other materials to try too, but I might test some paint on a piece of tent fabric and see how it holds up if I fold and crease it and rough it up a bit. Another possibility would be sewing a liner of some dark, opaque fabric inside. The trick is to not get too involved with putting this together. Because even my free time is valuable to me and if it takes me more than half a day to put it together, I may as well buy the $1400 light blocking tent.

Other possibilities:

Hmm pretty nice little pop tent you found here, this could be a great mobile shelter for our Burning Man doc this year out in Black rock dessert...need to look into it and make sure it has some kind of stakes or way to lock it down in heavy winds.

yikes! Just found the order form...whats the deal, this thing is more expensive then all of our insurance coverage for the entire shoot.

Sometimes you DO get what you pay for. I've done way to many features with crappy pop-up tents and duvateen clamped and gaffer-taped all over - I'm just too old for it.

Yeah, you could literally just buy a tent, throw some moving blankets over it, then buy a generator and a nice AC unit to keep it cool, and you'd still save some cash. ;)

So, it looks like Off Hollywood put a link to my tent up here.

Some of you think it might be too expensive? Well, it's intended for the DIT out there that's working on commercials and features who's tired of having to ask the grips to help erect a blackout shelter out of 8x frames and 20x solids. This tent gives those technicians the freedom to set up in seconds and take it down in seconds. All he might have to ask the grips for is a sand bag or two.

If you want to make your own tent from something that's out there, that's great, but it's takes a lot of time to get it done. As it is, it took me over a year to build this one.

The cost of it, if you break it down, isn't a lot at all. If you're getting a kit rental with your gear and it saves you time, which is in effect, saving you money, then it won't take that long to make your money back on it.

Thanks for all the comments. I love hearing what people say about it.

Keep the comments coming. Good, bad, I love'em all.

If it takes you a year to build each one you ought to charge more :)

One of my best mates works for a company that makes the covers for those crime scene investigations tents, some of them are huge. I doubt they are less expensive than this but it'd be funny to get them to make a black one... if only so I can bury bodies without attracting undue attention!

Oh I do chuck, it's just I'm more of a morning person so I'd appreciate the tent from that point of view.

OK, I see now, a "morning person" are we
Morning is for awakening at sunrise to praise Ra for one more day and then promptly going back to sleep. Although it might be easier there in the UK what with all those bogs. Kinda rocky around here.

Can we get an estimate on how much it costs and how the logo is put on the tent? Say black/white and red of equal size to your own logo.

Here in the great NW every fall one can walk thru the woods and see many "shelters" set up. Some don't even need poles! What the hell you say?
Just take a looky at this.

http://www.davistent.com/html/NoPoleSetUp.html

Sometimes at the end of the day, (sometimes earlier) one can hear the sounds of joyfull laughing and joshing coming from within. And if your lucky even the sweet refrain of a banjo.

Another option..
The frame from a standard popup shelter.
Blackout curtain material used in home theaters, comes in different colors including offwhite. Many fabric stores carry this stuff, I know JoAnnes does.

Someone with a commercial grade sewing machine, and pay them, hehehe.

Keep the original material (and sides if needed) from the popup shelter for rain cover.

I figure you could make a 10x10 for well under 1K USD.

"Can we get an estimate on how much it costs and how the logo is put on the tent? Say black/white and red of equal size to your own logo."

What costs are you interested in? To put your logo on a tent? Well, you'd have to give me a logo and then I have to send it over to the shop and have them write me up an estimate. The price varies with the number of tents purchased. The logos are screened on and can be roughly 10" high x 40" long.

I'll definitely be picking one up with logo and all.

You can't beat how quickly that tent's setup and ready to go.

Rosebrand in NYC sells a fireproof fabic called "Commando cloth" which we use for total blackout cloth in live shows.

Get a (2) standard popup tents- your choice of size - and get a seamstress to take one apart for a pattern for the commando cloth inner liner. Afix the liner permenently or with velco or something more creative.

Should work well for the more budget minded.

Curran Giddens
07-10-2007, 05:43 AM
Since you seem to have a lot more budget minded folks here on Reduser, who are about to blow a ton of cash on their RED, why not offer a Reduser special?

No extra charge for logos!

Jay Silver
07-11-2007, 06:22 AM
I'd love to offer a "Red" special, but I just can't. There's not enough room in the price to do that. I don't make the tents in China, I make them here in the US. One of the reasons they're slightly expensive is the ability to make modifications to the tent as well as add company logos. Not to mention paying people who put these things together a living wage. If I bought 250 tents at a time in China, I'd run into a whole bunch of problems, mostly, where do I put them? I live in Brooklyn and space is a little hard to come by.

Chris Gearhart

The Brooklyn capo got pinched and business has been suspended until the heat blows over. I imagine there'll be a new administration set up within the month.

I'll expect a cut, though. Maybe a free logo, too.
