Hey guys,
Is anyone with a RED (or a low enough number), going to Burning Man with it? I'd love to rent/borrow it for a few hours to shoot some B-roll for something. Let me know, we can work something out...

1) No way anyone will make it there with a production RED.
2) From what I understand getting permission to shoot there is very difficult.
3) Number 2 doesn't apply to forum member Haskell, so suck up to him.

Wait a minute.... that can't be right. I watched a documentary at the Orinda Film Festival in 2004 that was shot entirely at Burning Man.

Aha, you are on to something. This serves as a clue to the origins of Rule #3.

Ok well, I'll feed more "clues" it was about a guy who basically went to burning man buck naked. They filmed how he would survive the week, he had literally only the skin on his body! It was so funny, but by the end, he had created this palace of sorts via the communities help, and he finally had some clothes on.

I believe there have been many Docs shot at Burning Man (http://www.Burningman.com) of all shapes and sizes and will be many more throughout its existence unless they completely banish film crews all together.

You are allowed to shoot at Burning Man as long as you apply for written permission to do so. They are very friendly with camera crews as long as The comitee knows who you are and what your doing there. Loads of Press and film crew info from the Burning man site, or you can start HERE. (http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/video_cameras.html)
Unless the schedule changes, its pretty safe to say my RED ONE package will not be delivered by the time we Shoot the Burning Man film in late August, and I planned accordingly. Although having the RED ONE in time would certainly raise the bar of the entire project, not to mention make a great test, we safely planned around three HVX-200s. A Digital acquisition and tape-less work flow seemed to be the obvious choice for the micro budget that we were given…not to mention the rough dessert conditions. (ie.Hot days, COLD nights, often sustained sand wind storms of up to 60mph or more).
We were commissioned to shoot a doc for the Museum of Outdoor Arts (http://www.moaonline.org/), the subject of the Doc will evolve around there “Sacred Water Temple” (http://www.sacredwatertemple.org/)installation. This is not our 1st time to Burning Man, but it will be our 1st time shooting a film there and its all very exciting as each day approaches. We certainly will be putting the HVX-200s up to the test, even doing some Arial shooting in a small prop plane …I just hope they hold out. (Another reason we have three cameras.)
Burning Man is hard to explain in a nutshell but to keep this short its pure creative expression, a cultural phenomenon that is ever changing and its safe to say no two people will ever have the same Burning Man experience. Please PM me for info, especially if your going to be there…would like to meet up.
Look forward to meeting up with Tom if he can make it, his contribution would be greatly appreciated. I know CVB and other engineers, and artist alike have Black Rock on there horizon, if not this year then perhaps next.
Best of Luck in finding the RED ONE to "Rent/borrow" this year, and if you do...let me know ;)
Cheers.

Even E! has an episode of Naked Wild On (or is it Wild On Naked) shot at the Burning Man. How difficult can it be to get permission?

From what I here, its not too hard to get permission at all...but you do need to get it. All the info is laid out clearly on the Burning Man web site and I am pretty sure the deadline to submit your project is the 25th of this month.
