Anyone know if RED can stream to an FS-100 Firestore?

thanks.

It can't. Of course, FireStore could release a future product that does work with RED.

Why would you want that? Everyone I know who has used a Firestore has ran into nightmarish problems, including myself. Besides, what advantage would it have over the Red Drive?

It can't record to SVHS either.

Yep- let's hope there's never a Red Firestore for that matter.

There is a reason red has its own hard drives.

And that reason is our hard drive solutions are only one part of a wide choice of SATA compatible digital media. So you can either ride the price / performance curve of hard disks or flash memory, or both. Whichever is best for your application.

Second to that....my Gaffer is shooting his girlfriend's senior film on a HVX w/ movietube, and he has had major problems with the Firestore they are using....not worth it to me. I used it twice and now just bring my G4 laptop with me to use as a dump drive....never again!

I was under the impression that Firestore drives had ridden out their problems and were not very reliable. I'm considering the purchase of a FS4. Any advice is welcome.

The existing Firestore product line is not compatible with the RED ONE camera, as it uses a SATA interface. Our Digital Magazines provide dual 2.5" disk drives - either hard disk or flash memory equivalent - with a SATA interface to the camera, plus FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB-2 (mini syle) interfaces for a computer.

They are not specified for, and have not been tested with, other cameras that may support external drive recording over IEEE-1394.

Kinda depends on what your needs/budget are. If you need hourlong takes take after take- there's not much alternative. Otherwise go for 16GB P2 cards and a good laptop for transfers. Firestore has done a lot of fixing but I still hear plenty of folks having headaches from them. Not to mention it's one more piece of gear that you have to carry.

Billy,

I use Firestores frequently on my day job. Record strait to the avid format and then edit from the drives. I have had little problem with them but I would never suggest using them with the Red. As others have pointed out they are not a fast as the Red drive and more expensive. If you are thinking about using Firestore with Red I would reconsider.

Firestore is a difficult animal but still necessary for some P2 jobs where the media is too expensive otherwise. There is some testing neccessary before you jump into a project with it, but once you learn the hiccups its a good device in my book.

If there is a good way to go from HD-SDI to DVCProHD over firewire than the Firestore might be a good way to skip to DVCProHD P2 off the RED, possibly a good option for a quick AVID only gig, but currently looking convoluted.

It looks like 720pRedCodeRGB will be just as viable and better for everything else in that category.

I use Firestores all the time because I do mostly run and gun work and I don't have time to download. I've had a few problems, especially with vibration, but for the most part they've worked very well for me. I have both FS4 and FS100, and they are pretty rugged. I've dropped both several times from about 3 feet high (crappy belt clips), and they still work.

I read in another thread that Peter Jackson had some vibration problems while doing helicopter shots with the Red drive. I think it's inherent to using disk drives. That's where flash memory comes in handy.

I have to confess here:
I rather like my Firestore...

Ouch!
