They have some great old factory space at affordable rates to shoot in.
(I was doing PA work a couple of months ago in the middle of Greek town).
Some of the space would be fantastic for doing green screen work.
Baltimore is a great town.

Hi Guys,
Very early stages to concrete this down but there is potential that I could be moving to the D.C area late next year. Having talks with some people but still very early days yet. Never been there, haven't got a clue about the place but just to let you guys know. Maybe I'll find a few puddles to shoot in!!

Cheers,
Mark.

What sort of tests will you be running? I know a some people who would donate time and lenses to test it out for free. I would love to actually see one in the flesh so to speak. I live less than an hour from Beth.

This is my first post on this board, but i have made a few posts on the DVX board. I am currently doing the post production curriculum at James Madison. Well, to say the least, it is somewhat underwhelming for advance students.

I would like to join the get together, but what city is it in? More or less so i can mapquest it.

Are we planning a get together when the first Reduser gets their Red. Presumable, it will be up to that red user to schedule something. I for one would love to see it in action, as do most others. But, if not, i think we Redusers will understand.

AFI Silver is in Silver Spring, north east of DC. Comming from Mordor—er—Virginia on Friday at 6:30 will be the worst drive of your life, so come early.

I think AdamL will be the first of us to get his red, is that right adam?

As per mapquest, it looks like about a 2.5 hour drive. And if what you said about the commute is true, which it is, then, i might just attend a Red gathering, if Adam sets one up when he gets his Red. If he is willing that is.

Adam C Lubkin
08-01-2007, 09:51 PM
As far as I know I'll be the first in area, but if everything goes according to schedule then she'll only be here for a few hours of shooting because there's a rush to get her up to Canada for test shooting on "Corner Gas". When we meet at the AFI, we can discuss whether there will be enough time to justify a get-together in Frederick.

tentative
Zoom Lens
evf and lcd
single raid drive
2 batteries
rails

Still need to find a matte box kit and a tripod head/set of sticks.
Oh, and a new computer system to edit on, up in the air as to whether it will be Mac or Windows.
Lots of other stuff I've probably forgotten about.

You live in Winchester and work in Baltimore? That's a pretty long drive.

I was planning to make it to the gathering, but just checked the AFI site and it said that the Godfather was cancelled. Something about being pulled for restoration.

Anyway, anyone have other suggestions for a get together or perhaps just want to meet for dinner or coffee? Or maybe I missed something on the site...

Let me know.

Thanks,

Now your talking, plus there is easy metro access (Smithsonian) and no charge for tickets AFAIK.
Plus there are a couple of pretty good restaurants and a book store in the museums and underground between the National Gallery and the Modern Art.

Barring something coming up, count me in.... Good recovery adaml.:)

For most people coming in, this might actually be easier.
Pick a convenient metro stop anywhere outside DC and ride in. On weekends, most metro stops do not charge for parking. Check the metros web site for the stops farthest out (end of line). Getting on those will increase your chances of getting a seat. Weekends tend to be very busy.

Stalker
September 15 at 2:30 p.m.
Andrei Tarkovsky's allegorical excursion through a ravaged post-apocalyptic landscape ("the Zone") is led by a Stalker (Aleksandr Kaidanovsky) who guides two others—the Writer (Anatoli Solonitsyn) and the Professor (Nikolai Grinko)—in their nearly hallucinatory quest to find an elusive wish-fulfilling place called "the Room." (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979, 35mm, Russian with subtitles, 163 mins.)

Joe Carney
09-13-2007, 10:50 AM
There is a buffet in the National Gallery, and a restaurant with multiple options in the underground walkway between the National Gallery and Modern Art (where the film is showing I think). Neither are cheap. The only other place close would be the restaurants in the Natural History, but they aren't as good. Of course we could buy hot dogs from the street vendors. hehehe.

If we do the buffet, we need to allow plenty of time since there is usually a line. The Restaurant in the underground walkway has several options, from cooked to order, to fast food, to a salad bar.

Joe Carney
09-15-2007, 08:58 AM
Tentative plans are for meeting for lunch at 1 to 1:15 or if you can't make lunch, meet at 2pm.
The film is showing in the East Auditorium (Modern Art).
We can meet in the Auditorium in the lobby around 1pm and then walk to the restaurant (underground) about 2 minutes away.
At 2 we can stop by the lobby again for anyone who didn't make lunch and then go up to the theater.

The East Auditorium is literally a seperate buidling East of the Main gallery.
The best metro stop is the Smithsonian. There are plenty of street maps around to find the building if you are not sure.
Parking around the mall is difficutl to find and they are enforcing the 2 hour limit. There are parking garages around if you don't mind paying through the nose.

Hey guys, sorry I had to miss it. I agonized up to the last minute but there were just too many obligations that came up, and I would have paid a heavy price if I didn't address them.

As Joe mentioned, there's a slew of Ken Loach films at the Silver Theater in October. Ken will be there himself on the 11th. I'm trying to set up an interview with him so that day may not be the best. Sunday the 14th there's a double feature in the afternoon, and "Kes" is showing in the evening. Maybe meet for dinner and then see "Kes"? If you're not familiar with Loach, check out "Sweet Sixteen". It's a good introduction to his work.

Hey all, I'm new to the forum, I've been investigating Red a bunch lately, but haven't got the money to get on the list yet. I'd love to see one, I'm in Charlottesville, VA, I'm good on a set, and I recently began occasional trips to DC for work in Nat Geo- although in general I work remote from home. Update..
Had a nice dinner with Mark, charming fellow, lots of great stories to tell. Made me wish I'd spent some time in the South Pacific.
Taking him to the place he was staying in Alexandria, my gps went haywire and we ended up in Maryland for a few minutes, but I recovered and got us back to VA. With all the construction and alternative routes going on near the wilson bridge, my gps just couldn't handle it. Luckily Mark was a good sport about the whole thing.

Yeah Joe, great to meet you for an impromptu dinner. I think someone had a sense of humor when they made those GPS's with a female voice. The only time a woman can tell a man how to drive. That's gotta hurt sometimes....

Hope all is well and thanks again for the lift.

All this is to say, if anybody needs a hand with a shoot, give me a shout- I'm close by and compelled.
Maybe some of you will attend the VA Film Fest next month?

Zeke, thanks for asking
I've been just tryin' to carve out a living in little charlottesville, making commercials, epks, videos. This weekend and next I'm finally making a couple of my own shorts. In fact, I've been up all night, so excuse me if I say anything weird in this post.

I've got an ongoing documentary project I've been at for almost two years, a local man's quest to the famed race of leMans with a modified Ford GT. This guy has a real chance, and it's actually quite a story. I'm not a motorsports guy, mind you, or at least didn't start out as one. I like cameras, I like shooting, and I liked the film Grand Prix, or at least its cinematography.

The film was off to a good start last year when I cut a 24 minute show and won two Telly's- but I don't think I'm sticking to the serial idea- just two docs, a before and after.

I love filmmaking. Being largely self-taught, though, I admit to getting confused by some of the dialogue on the forum. I'm very serious about the red, but I've never used anything quite like it. I'd really enjoy any chance I had to work with someone on or around one.

Maybe a labor trade? Who knows? Maybe a few Red owners want some media access tickets to leMans?

I love the leMans races, I've always wanted to go to Sebring, at least for the last few hours. I think they have one in Daytona as well, or used to. Which ones have you attended?
btw, a few months ago, I was a PA for "Pinks all Out" at the Maryland International Speedway. Great crowd too! I'd forgotten what a rush watching drag racing could be.

I went to some DP races: Watkins Glen, VIR, and Miller Motorsports Park. And I've been to Petite and Sebring in the American leMans series.
Before Watkins, I'd never been to a race.
There I was, media vest on. Right up against the guardrail. I had my tripod set up, spectators behind me, and along comes a little Indy car- the first race car I'd ever really seen on a track- and I thought I could film it. Well that thing thundered by me and almost blew the camera over, which I managed to save in spite of swallowing my own stomach.
what a fool-
what a rush.
My favorite was Miller Motorsports Park, which I found to be really cinematic. Consistent weather all 5 days, mountains in every direction, big sky, and even light: bright. Sure is a big track, though, and I didn't have a golf cart.

What sort of tests will you be running? I know a some people who would donate time and lenses to test it out for free. I would love to actually see one in the flesh so to speak. I live less than an hour from Beth.

Joe C.

Hey zeke, sorry just saw this message now...

I don't think I'll be running that many 'tests'

Will probably begin shooting a feature film almost immediately. The test will be the shoot, I suppose.

Unfortunately no other Redusers made it, but I went down with some friends and had a great time. It would still be good to meet at the Silver Theater, but instead of Lawrence, how about The Godfather on Friday, August 24, at 6:30?

damn dude, I saw lawrence 4 times when it was recently at the AFI. hahahaha...

So Zak, are you shooting locally in the general DC area? Would love to see the RED in action, if that wouldn't be too much trouble.

I am sure he does, I don't know if off the top of my head. But it seems the person he was going to buy Red 380 from at the last min wanted a $10k premium and that pretty much killed that deal.

So he just got in line and if all goes as planned it will come in July.

Anyone in the Area get their Red? Please PM me if you have. I have a great idea for some software for it and need to see how the Developing workflow goes.

Btw, I am the CEO of Red Lightning Software ( HD Monitor Pro ), So we should be able to make some really slick stuff for Red once I see how it all works together.

Hey everyone,

I'm a professor at Frostburg State Univeristy and I'm thinking about getting a Red for our advanced video class.

I'd like to talk to Red owners in the greater DC, Baltimore or western Maryland area and perhaps setup a meeting to see your gear.

Thanks for any help you can give.

DC Users, would there be anyone willing to allow some engineer types from National Geographic look at a RED system in order to get measurement specs on? Just looking at a potential requirement for measurements for an underwater housing. This would save me having to bring a system in from Europe. They would need about a day to get all measurements, maybe less than a day but just to be sure.

Please PM me if available to help out.

Cheers,
Mark.

Anybody in DC have a Scratch system? I know Ceribal Lounge has been running Red files for spots, but they are just using their macs.

Anyone have plans to get one? And what is the total Red count in DC Baltimore? I'm guessing about 8. what do you guys think?

Matt Benda

not sure of any scratch seats in the d.c area. i took the scratch course on fxphd back in april. i toyed around with getting a scratch system but honestly, can't see spending that much money when my kona3 works great.
also, i had to push back my red. so it will be arriving in the end of october.
so i guess that makes me 9?

thanks ed,
i'll try to make the wifv event. sounds like it will be a good time.

also, i received an email last week saying that chesapeake systems, butler film, aja and apple will be hosting a red event at AFI on oct.16th 7-9pm.
you have to send an email to: tina at chesa dot com to be put on the list.
its a free event but limited seating.
should be interesting.

I hope this isn't too weird a request. I have to do a still shoot of a Sachtler Soom tripod + Petrol Bag + K-tek Boom for a spread in the magazine I work for GearNinja.com. I don't own a RED but feel it would be the right camera atop this tripod. So I'm wondering if a couple people local to me (Gaithersburg, MD) would be willing to stand in as crew on this still photo. Basically it mimics an ENG 'interview' scenario. No money in it but I can pay for Gas & Lunch. Expect it would take about 1 hr .Thanks and sorry to make my first post a greedy request like that ;)
