Hi All,

I'm investigating investing in another RED one, and building a 3D rig (probably P+S Technik).

With EPIC presumably just around the corner, do you think it is worthwhile jumping in now, or waiting until the new set-up arrives? By this, I'm assuming that my new 3D rig may not have compatible accessories for the EPIC.

Any advice greatly received!

Cheers,

James.

A 3D rig will be less complex on the Epic, as you won't need any 90 degree mirrors.

I would say it all depends on when you need to do the shoot.

With REDs generous trade-in programme, you won't lose money (on the camera) by buying a R1 now.

You will if you want to use "normal" interocular distance or smaller. The advantage in the smaller form factor is that you can build a much smaller and lighter rig because the only part of the camera that needs to be mounted on it is the brain/lens combination.

You still need a beam-splitter if you want to get closer than about 6 feet to your subject.... We're in the process of designing one now.

YES... the only think that makes me cringe regarding 3D is the size of the rigs. They look so limiting. I have no experience with any of them though.
