DPReview just tested the Fuji S5 Pro. It uses one of those new-fangled sensors which we have been talking about that has little pixels that are less-sensitive than others, theoretically giving you greater dynamic range.

And guess what? It works! They claim 12EV of dynamic range... on that good ol' Stouffer wedge...

Looks like if you push it too far you get color problems. But hey, it still looks promising.

And now I am going on a reduser.net break.

The technology shows some promise but the resolution is not very good on the S5. Fuji needs to get beyond the 6 megapixel sensor.

Its funny you should say beyond 6 MP. I've heard many photographers say that 6 MP is all you will ever need for work that isn't being put on billboards. I also remember lots of pro photographers saying "not more pixels, better pixels!" And to top it off, even if you do shoot for billboards, much of that printing can only support surprisingly low DPI (I once made a huge print from my D70, and the printer told me 300 DPI was the printers max performance... and it looked great), so that gives your camera selection some flex room in the resolution department.

My second digital back was 6 Mp and It really delivered great images up to about 16x20. It was far superior to the S3 fuji that I got a few years later. I went from the 6mp back to a 22mp back wich was a leap in quality. I've used it to make several 50' billboards. Now I use the 39mp back with quality that rivals 4x5 film and while this is overkill in most situations it has the same advantage that we are all seeking in Red one. That is downsampling, always looks better than up rez.
