I'm always amazed at how well this camera handles.... especially the colors. Eventually these clips will be used as promo spots, so you guys are getting a sneak peek at what I've been up to :weight_lift:
Enjoy!

Me too! Does anyone here wanna mess with an uncompressed clip? I could upload a small TIFF image sequence for people to play with while they wait for their Red to arrive :)
I'm not a compositor, really, so I'm relying heavily on the cameras data to do these shots. I have a very hard shot someone here might be able to handle, its a shot of a jar of green pickles, complete with brine sloshing around, motion blur, etc. A real challenge, I've tried it, it can work, but I'm not terribly good at compositing. I imagine some masking and layers would be needed to handle a few though spots though... if anyone wants a try at it, let me know.

I have SHAKE at home and would like to mess with the uncompressed clip~

what is the general idea of the shot you want?

Well I'd love to see someone key out that pickle jar on green screen shot. I used keylight and it works great, but I can see a few areas require masking and such since this is green on green... I can send you the background shot too (D70 still photo), or you can put one in if you have something that matches the lighting, depth, etc...
This might take a while to upload, probably a good 500-800MB. I'll also throw up some other clips too, non green screen. Anyone have any shots they would like to see? Outdoor? High contrast, natural light? ect...
That's jaw dropping. Imagine how RED will fare(!)

There's a little bit of edge twitter in the pencil jar once keyed; is this a rushed key or is it the pixel shift taking effect?

It looks like noise?
It would be interesting to see how well the footage will key if the green/blue is dark. e.g. there are some kid's puppet show where the puppeteers dress in green/blue suits. Naturally there are folds in the suit and they have shadows in them. In that situation it's difficult to avoid pockets of shadow in the puppeteers.

That would be me as a compositor, which I'm not..... I'm sure someone else can key that better than me. Also, its not really a green screen, its green felt, with wrinkles LOL. I know what you mean, you must be looking very closely, as only a handful out of hundreds have spotted that. Most compressed formats would die on a shot like that though, those tiny mesh holes and all the sleight feathering the depth of field causes really make it hard to key. On the whole, using a better screen and better compositor, I'm sure you can do some crazy stuff with the camera.

Great looking stuff. Looking at the footage in Shake.
Looking at it as YUV footage, there seems to be about twice as much data in the luma channel as the chroma channels. Do you know if thats the Sorensen, or is that in the original files as well? Could you post a couple still frames uncompressed? (Or is that Shake doing that?)
Impressed with what the Andromeda folks have done, like an HVX without the cards (which only has a 16x9 SD chip and pixel shifts anyways...).
Thanks,
Charles

Yeah, I imagine the Sorenson 3 Codec kinda messes with the file. The original is a 16 bit tiff image sequence, so I crammed about 800 MB down into like 20 MB. I'll post some frames, trying to figure out the best way of doing that... I would say its better than an HVX to be very honest about it. I've used HVX on several shoots and really messed around with the footage, nowhere near Andromeda. In the first shot, I totally change the color of that cup, no artifacts showed up whatsoever, thats really impressive, as in DVCPROHD that would cause some issues. I actually used AE 7.0 and Keylight to do the keying work.
EDIT: The footage is actually RGB when you render it out of the .dvx file.

Still working on a way to upload a whole image sequence. I've never messed with zip files...:help: LOL
SPECIAL NOTE!
The edges are always a little weird, this is the pixel shift going on, I just resize by 1% to crop it out. No biggie.

Shake shows you what you've got, it has no internal limitations on processing in either spatial or luma/chroma terms. How are you viewing the YUV, by going through the ColorSpace node?
Thanks for the TIFFs, I'll have a squiz now. :D To be honest it's only because I know something like that pencil jar is the hardest possible thing for a system like this to get cleanly that I picked it up. In all likelihood a 2px blur on the area would hide it fine, especially if it was for a TVC where the focus shouldn't be there anyway.

Good point on the fact that its hard. Thats why I choose it, and many people in the industry know there are LOTS of variables with green screen. So far everyone has approved of the cameras performance. I plan on making available (somehow, still working on the logistics) uncompressed demo footage, so if people are wondering about that from the demo, they can have a crack at keying it themselves. Compositing is like an art, I'm a DP, not a compositor, so with zero experience in the area, if I can pull off a key like that not knowing squat really.... must be some great source material
Also, I found that the footage handles a sleight amount of sharpening very well. When I upres to 1080 using a sleight sharpening, it looks great, better than HVX200 by a long shot. Amazing what uncompressed data can do.

Attached is the shake script I built and a JPG version of the output. Still needs work, especially with spill suppression, but it's hard at this stage to see whether it's lighting or a codec issue at this point. The key itself is about as clean as I can get it without spending ages on it. It looks good (aside from the green in the low end...)

cool, I've noticed that keying plug ins are not all equal. I used Keylight, man thats powerful stuff. I'm working on trying to get the files into a zip folder somehow....

The TIFFs are nice, full 444 indeed. I notice, as in their demo pix, a bit of patterning in the image (particularly on the pen cap).
I am curious - is it static or does it boil like grain? I could see it having a nice, filmy look, especially when uprezzed to 1080 (which softens it a little).

Very, very nice, Chris. Impressive. Don't tell my RED #791, but deep down I'm still in love with my DVX, too. ;)

It "boils" like grain, if even. I've shot things that are virtually grain free, though its usually a shot with lots of lighter color objects (the highlights have less grain, like all digital cameras). I "expose to the right" then darken in post, this gives me the finest possible grain. I end up losing some latitude doing this (on the lower end), but thats a way of life no matter what your format if you want a clean image. However, at about 9.5 stops max capture latitude, I can have a nice 8 or 7 AFTER color correction..... =) lets see an HVX200 do that!
On the topic of uprezzing to 1080, it looks great, I actually apply a very small amount of sharpening, certainly gives a film look. The footage simply doesn't macro block, and I believe thats the reason why it handles the uprezzing so well.

Oh, by the way, I finally figured out how to make a zip file.... watch out for a post. I'll probably make a new thread for it. It will be 16 bit TIFF image sequence too :gun:
