View Full Version : Shipping costs?

Now it's a time to think about shipping costs.
Is it possible that RED provide accurate shipping costs
with the Shipping Calculator something like eBay does it???
Or can we use FedEx "Rates & Transit Time" for an approximately calculation?
http://www.fedex.com/ratefinder/home?cc=US&language=en
Also we would need approximative weight of the parcel.
Then we would get the approximative quotes.

So I did approximative calculation:
Parcel weight approximately: 22 lbs or 10 kg
Parcel could include
the camera body weight around 9 lbs (4.1 kg)
+ basic production pack
+ RED ONE power pack
+ RED EVF Viewfinder
+ RED DRIVE 320GB
+ RED FLASH (CF) Module
+ RED F Mount (Nikon)
----------------------------
Total weight about 22 lbs or 10 kg
Quick Quote FedEx International PriorityŽ $233.84>>
http://www.fedex.com/ratefinder/home?cc=US&language=en
233.84 US Dollar (USD) equals 171.56 Euro (EUR)
according to the Bank Austria Currency Calculator
http://kursinfo.ba-ca.com/CurrencyCalculator.html?lang=en
For Weights & Measures calculator you could use this

When I enter the value of the equipment and pack it in three different crates, I get a quote of 581 us$ for the fedex international economy option and 730us$ for priority.
I have a slightly different list than the above, one crate with camera, one with accessories and one with zoom lens, at an approx value of 35.000 US$
The price is for shipping from Los Angeles, USA to Oslo, Norway using Fed Ex, in my budget I have an estimated 800$ for shipping/insurance of the complete package.

+ RED EVF Viewfinder
+ RED DRIVE 320GB
+ RED FLASH (CF) Module

FedEx International PriorityŽ $170.24

It could be just someone testing the waters for a movie plot, but I've heard there is a plan afoot, like a Brinks robbery or something, to do a crash and grab from the carriers that will be delivering the early numbered REDs. Not sure who's behind it... could be film camera makers, die hard film preferr-ers, or even late-to-the party camera reservists.
Doesn't matter who. Just trust no one. How much to have one of those diamond couriers, you know, with handcuffs and suits and all, deliver? Anyone know?

screw shipping costs... for those outside the US, import duties are gonna be reaming us for a goodly amount.
As far as duties are concerned, it may cost the same to fly and get it.. and have a mini holiday while your at it. (Assuming the import duty would be at least 10%)

I would not concider taking care of 50.000 $ worth of brand new equipment in hotel room, on an airplane (how do you carry all on board?), worrying wheter it shows up at baggage claim...
That´s going to be a very stressful mini-"holiday", I will leave it to the pros (fedex and other international carriers)
Third man, when you get a quote of 156.65$, is that fully insured?

And ace what happens if your holiday goes down like this:
----------------
Customs Agent: Sir have you spent more than $200 on your holiday?
Yourself: Yes I spent $30,000.
Customs Agent: I'm sorry sir but we're going to have to confiscate your equipment for investigation.
-----------------
Customs doesn't always take kindly to trying to 'smuggle' in foreign goods without declaring it accurately. And often the result is a package which never leaves a warehouse.

Hi,
I usually estimate packed weight to be twice that of the actual item, probably about right if you end up buying a 'Red Pelican Case'.

At least here in Australia, not only is there an import duty exemption for film and professional video cameras, but we have a free trade agreement so any products sourced from the USA have no import duty. Check your local laws, of course.

Hi,
That's interesting, I know Bruce from Aranda had big complications with import duty on a Mitchell he was converting to 2 perf from an American client.

Hi Cail, are you sure about this? Whenever I order gear from the US either from B&H or where ever I always get hit with 5% Customs duty when I have shipments over AU$1000.

1. What is your suggestion for the import of RED in Canada (I am a resident of Quebec)?
2. Does Red camera go under The North American Free Trade Agreement?
3. If I ship it to NY State, will I skip the USA Tax?
Thanks
Albert

i cant understand why anyone would try an do anything illegal to save a few bucks. duty may be a lot, but having your stuff confiscated at customs, or having pay a fine and the duty is going to be a lot more hassle than it is worth.
just pay the duty people!
Okay I take it back. I don't advocate any of the above. Legal disclaimer etc etc.

I'm going for the mini holiday. With Mexico and customs duties in the 18% range when crossing the border it makes no sense at all NOT to get it myself and then carry it back in a pelican case as my personal gear (in one or two trips). Not to mention having DHL, Fed-Ex or anyone else running it around from transfer station to transfer station. I know they are pros but I like minimizing the amount of people and number of air/ground changes my kit goes through.
Mexico is an exception to what you might experience in Europe however. I've had too many packages opened in Guadalajara by Mexican customs to later find something missing.
Mini-vacation here i come........:shiftyph34r:

I thought Jim said, he was gonna play Santa, and fly around the world dropping off all the RED cameras at every international airport in less than 24 hrs... subject to change that is... ;-)

Hi,
I remember a story about a motion control rig, that got exported to Mexico in small pieces, I understand a local 'fixer' helped with the import.

I do quite a bit of fixing for projects in Baja....and it's a nightmare to do them by the book. So i find in many situations it's much easier to just bring my gear across on my own and then import it when it's already here at a lower cost of course. Otherwise I have to provide paperwork such as: manufacturing country of origin cert; manufactures receipt; use a customs agent; Mexican transport and of course subject to outrageous import duties---in the end it's a pile of paperwork and has to go into the hands of Mex. customs agents etc.... In the end---when in Rome......

I'm not 100% on the FTA but film cameras and pro video cameras were on the zero-duty category when I last looked at the documentation on importing.

I've heard that Norway, India, China,Common Mkt. and Mexico all offer small incentives for tips on smuggling into their countries. Now I'm budgeting less for my RED....

I am planning to do it strictly by the book, and in Norway motion picture equipment is excempt from import duty (article 90), there is the VAT of 25% but as a business I get it back the next month...

Ditto for NZ I believe. But GST (VAT) is 12.5%.

First world is goooood and easy to do by the book......second and third world is not easy even when posted in the law books.
But end result is the same.

Ya, the days of checking production equipment with airlines are over. I only check the tripod cuz it doesn't fit in the overhead:)
Seriously though, an associate checked his SR2, mags etc and his Canon 8 square S16 lens in professional pelican cases from LAX to Nepal thru Miami (first mistake is Miami). All sealed with colored zip ties. On arrival in Nepal the cases felt light but had the correct "original" colored zip ties in place. When opened, voila, no gear!
Another associate hand carrying his SR2 thru Miami had the case disappear from under his feet while at the ticket/check in counter.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?
Hand carry is the only option for high end gear and the Red system will fit neatly into legal pelican carry on sizes or in a soft bag.

Ahh yes, the conspiracy theories. Love it. Perhaps RED will utilize the same low tech strategies of the sex toy industry. Plain brown packaging with discreet labeling...so I've heard:detective2:
