Yes, I was just thinking the same thing. Sure would be nice to get some feedback as to the quality before I buy. Those two zooms sure would fulfill a lot of requirements.

The 18-50mm and the 300mm RED lenses should be available for testing at Gibby's LA RED Test event -- sometime in september. So I figure that the best plan is to reserve and get my place in line and then see what the tests show. I fully expect the lenses to perform well and be a real bargain at these prices.

I was under the impression that reservations may not be necessary for accessories as long as you have a deposit and reservation for a existing package. Seems to me that if they call and are about to send out your camera, they would allow you to do some rearranging with out having to wait another six months for say a lens or storage option.
Is this not correct? Maybe someone frome red can clarify this.

That's the general intent, but as I understood it, there's no guaranty. And for a lens like the 50-150 that won't ship until later this year, it might be a good idea to get your place in line. Because they'll suddenly be available and there will could be 1000 RED owners who already have their camera who're going to be wanting one.
Production schedules and quantities are still being ironed out, I'm sure... We haven't heard much of an official statement from the RED team on this. Only that they will do their best to make accessories available to people at the same time as their cameras.

from what i remember RED prefers that you pre order so they can have a idea on how many to produce ??? ...

"We have our hands full getting this project off the ground. Our intent is to make personal contact with each reservation holder before we put their order together to package as many accessories they want as possible.
Jim"
"Reservation holders are protected for future accessory orders, so relax. The new orders are primarily for new customers. If you are serial number 33 and want accessories, relax. You will be in front of orders taken at NAB or online tomorrow. We plan to ship cameras with accessories in order of camera reservations... there was an advantage to having faith.
Jim"
while these quotes are reassuring, they're not exactly guarantees. i haven't ordered any accessories and when i asked kelly, she told me to wait a month or two before ordering and that was about a month ago. i have no reason to wait except it would be nice to see some written guidelines similar to the release schedule. if not for my relief, at least i can make it easier for red so as not to inundate them with a slew of requests.

Thanks for the info, sounds like I should be OK if I wait for a month or two when orders start to ship and accessories and the schedules for them are released. I'm at around 1,500 - 2000 so I'll be waiting a while anyway.

In an email exchange with Kelly a month ago, I was led to believe that RED lenses are not included in what Jim meant by "accessories." She said if I really wanted a specific lens then I should reserve it (which I did). But hopefully that was just a recommendation to be 100% certain I get it, and not an absolute requirement to get one.

that's a little confusing but not entirely implausible. i've had the original zoom reserved since the day it was announced. i've always been told that transfer to the newer zoom would be no problem and it would be shipped as an accessory with the cam body but then again i did have the reservation. since good glass isn't machined and "mass-produced" in the same numbers as metalwork, hard drives and flash media are, i would suggest anyone put in their reservations for lenses and double-check in order to get them with their camera shipments or as soon as possible.

Anyone know the speed of the 50-150?
Oh yeah, is there a way to the RED store from this site?

the 50-150 is listed as T3 (f2.8). Store is at http://www.red.com/store -- so there you now have it linked from this site. :P
