View Full Version : Exposure-Meters Confusion

I'm a bit confused which meters to use in Raw view.
Question: could by any chance someone list the different types of Exposure-Meters and their functionality and accuracy in the different View-Modes?
(also taking into account the new BETA BUILD 20...)
Would be a great help!

Hopefully my question just got lost, because of the reduser Heartattack...
Or is my question too stupid?

Probably got lost in the shuffle... raw meters give you the most accuracy of the info retained (and lost) in the raw file. There is a long answer to your question, but I'll let someone else step in here. Busy night...

I cant help but let innocent comments like this whip me into a world of Jannard magic, where magic cameras drop from the sky and new announcements greet me every time I login.

I'd also love to have a definitive answer to that question from Red - it seems like one of the ones that I often see answers to, but never from anyone Red...
Particularly, people mention every now and again that the false colour is innacurate in RAW mode - can someone say why? in what way? is it utterly untrustworthy? I've never found anything on that.
Thanks,

Went through some posts again to find an answer, but it seems impossible...
Here's what Dylon Mcleod wrote/asked to be correct
HISTOGRAM
Accurately reads levels when toggling between “VIEWNG SPACE” and “RAW VIEW”.
FALSE COLOR
“VIEWNG SPACE” versus “RAW VIEW” will read differently but “RAW VIEW” in false color does not read accurate levels (or is “not tuned” to RAW).
STOP LIGHTS
Like the histogram will accurately display levels when toggling between “VIEWNG SPACE” and “RAW VIEW”.
COLOR BAR
Basically a RAW indicator display, regardless of viewing space.
Is that right at the moment?
What about ZEBRAs?

But what meters do read accurate in RAW mode?

Histogram is spot on...

Do the meters accurately reflect chosen framerate/shutter speed settings?

This may be a stupid question! But is there a RAW Meter that can be used outside the camera for people like gaffers, DOP, or anyone else that need to measure the light?

If you want to measure RGB levels of light discretely, a tri-stimulus colorimeter. Like a ligh meter it doesn't correspond to raw directly as that is camera sensor data. It has to be used in the context of an exposure value or ISO speed reference setting. Minolta makes the most useful versions, they work like a spot meter, but they are pretty expensive.
If there were some way to remote the camera meter raw displays to a wireless handheld display that could work nicely too.

OK! What if? There were to be an off-camera transmitter that send a RAW picture, and by default its Light Meter interpretation of the RAW data. And, it had control over the T-Stop on the lens. Just a thought!

What if somebody first would explain the functuality of the many existing in camera meters! Personly I don't need more, I just want them to read accurate. False Color is a great tool same with the Histogram but to get back to my main question and still hoping someone will give a defenite answser to it:
What meters do read accurate in what Mode?
Anyone?
I really would appreciate it!

Well, I will test the meters in terms of reading correct in Raw-mode next time I get my hands on a Red and post the results...

"Only that there is a bug when you switch out of REDspace to RAW via a USER KEY, FALSE COLOR doesn't read back correctly.
However FC is correct when you switch out of REC709 to RAW via a USER KEY.
And FC is correct when you select RAW in the menus VIEW = RAW.
This bug is being addressed."
That helps me out a bit, hope it helps you too.
