View Full Version : RED shipping schedule delayed once more?

Taken from the RED website:
"RED comes out of engineering delay
The RED ONE is back on track after a two month engineering delay. Field testing is underway before entering into production.
RED ONE prototypes are being used on the Wanted set in Prague and has been chosen by Steven Soderbergh to shoot his next two movies, The Argentine and Guerrilla.
Valuable information will be gathered at these shoots and final tweaks will be done as needed before production begins."
So does this mean that the posted shipping schedule is off?
Assuming that Soderbergh's shoot is quite a ways off and final tweaks will be done to the RED camera based on those shoots before production begins....?

I believe it still stands. I believe Jarred has always said that Red, unlike other companies, has the ability to make accessory tweaks and design changes right up until production. And I thought I read that production starts the 25th of this month. That isn't too far off.

With modern electronics, particularly programmable logic (FPGAs, flash based micros, etc) changes can be made right up to the moment that the product is finished. I am certain that the will be UI changes and enhancements based upon feedback from these and other early cameras.

As Jim put it in the aforementioned thread:

I think that about covers it. :)

I'm just looking for clarification/confirmation.
I have alot riding on this new delivery schedule (as do many other people) including three feature length films shooting in August/September, October and November. :nerd:

I stated that we would use July and early August to tweak the cameras from what we have learned in the field. Schedule stands (for now).

They have always been very careful to say--and throughout each milestone too--that the "Schedule is always subject to change."

Dude, go buy a Sony and be happy. Please, we would rather have pros test our gear much like Ferrari and Honda do so on the track... and NOOOO!!!! I would not want you testing my camera. LET THE PROS DO WHAT YOU WISH YOU COULD. Thanks.

A brilliant point. I'm personally blown away that we're getting these heroes to test our camera and make it better. Imagine if we'd been given this offer:
a) You can get the camera now, as is, untweaked.
or
b) The best and brightest in Hollywood will test it for you, free of charge, and make sure you get the best image possible, with hardly any delay to your schedule at all.
No choice, really.

actually, if it means i get the cam a month or two early and red comes through with promised updates and upgrades, i would take choice (a). i appreciate input from anyone but red is using this slight beta testing delay to catch up on their engineering and help promote their red cameras to undecided hollywood budgets. what would make me thankful is a beta release of redcine software and a few 4k clips.

Are a range of test shot going to be released after the tweaks, but before the camera is released? I'm still very interest in seeing what indoor shots without additional lighting will look like, and the look of low light shots.

That would allow many of us to start testing our post work flow and would be a highly appreciated and an extremely useful tool to have now. I don't even care if the "clips" were actually camera generated they could be CG images (this would avoid the issue of making assumptions of the camera's performance on pre release product). I am just interested in confirming that the post work flow that I have planned is viable.

I'm sure most of the stuff they find in testing can be modified by firmware up until production. However, I have always wondered why the camera read out is on the back of the camera. How is the 1st going to see that info while shooting if he is on the follow focus camera left or camera right "dumb side"? Wouldn't he have to look around the operator's back? Infact this now makes both sides of the camera "dumb side" wouldn't it? Is the camera info or could the camera info be superimposed over the image on the LCD display? I'm sure someone has commented on this before or there is some solution. Anyone know? That is the type of things I'm most worried about. Stuff that can't be fixed by a firmware update.
Kinda like the recessed headphone jack on my iPhone. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb........

how about the 1st checks the shutter speed, fps etc. between shots?
then he knows the settings before he's pulling focus ...
... from what i recall some of the info is available in frame ...

yes, that would be really helpful. i wouldn´t care at all to be under NDA etc, as long we will get the software to plan the workflows. especialy for those, who have a cameras on order.

Yes, camera information will be available on the EVF and LCD. You can find more info on that in here:

and yes, I agree, this thread should be renamed and then closed...
