View Full Version : bright vertical line on material

It looks like a negative scratch and is totally vertical. Its position is 8% in from left. Two pixels wide bright. The sorrounding pixels left and right of the bright ones are slightly darker. I did not observe this when recording except once, when I then played back the sequence it looked fine. I assumed it was a temporary viewfinder problem. But now, when the job is done, the line is apparent in the following clips. First after changing drive, the line is gone. It is a mess and I now have to zoom in every clip, loosing composition. What has happened?

I had the same issue few times with build 18, when the camera was under heat stress. After a shutdown & about half hour cooling time, it worked OK.

Peter, maybe do a new black shading when the camera has been on for a while, to get a hot sensor balance. This is to prevent future problems (if it isn't a hardware fault). Definitely contact Red as per Brent's post. They probably have ways of fixing this at the R3D level to save your shots.
If that doesn't work however, and the shots are critical, there are software fixes available that can remove scratches etc from shots (designed for real film scratch removal).
I did a quick fix in Photoshop using dust and scratch removal on your JPG. Not perfect but that's from the compressed JPG file you provided. If you have the RAW 4K image sequence it should be far more accurate, and after removing the scratch and (most likely) downconverting to 1080p, for example, the shot will likely be fine:

Thanks Paul.
Maybe I got a tiny bit of hope back.
I will try Shake to see if I can do some kind of cloning.
Does anyone have a node for this already?

Update.
I have two solutions. One is to just zoom into the frame. The other is to lift the 6 pixel wide line and move the left part of the frame to the right to cover the gap using Shake. It works well in 75% of the cases when you don't sense the sharp shifting in pixel color along the vertical line.
I tried the scratch filter in Photoshop but it takes away small details all over and if you just apply it over the affected part it shows, especially with moving pictures. Maybe there is a way to fine tune this.
I also had the vertical line on the material shot after the change of drive, but a thinner one??
Anyway, after doing a black shading it seems to be fine but I am sending the camera to Red for checkout now. I don't want to experience this again.
The Red team are helping out just fine, as usual.

During camera testing today. We discovered a thin blue vertical line similar to Peter's in the center of our R3d files. It's not visible in live view during record only during playback. this issue does not appear on all clips, it's intermittent. We've contacted support@red.com

I had something similar happen way back.
Had the camera been running for a long period of time? That's when the issue would manifest itself.
I sent my unit back to RED for service and have never seen the problem again.

I had same probem with build 18. I've done a black shading and it disappears but not definitly. It happened a couple of time during one day.
I hope there is a better solution, even because black shading took his time.

Our Camera is at the moment at Red. So far I have not been given an explanation to why it occurred but I am sure it will be clarified when the time has come.

I've got the same problem six months ago.. Red fixed the problem, and the vertical bar has never re-appeared since. Black shading worked the first time it happened, but the second time it happened it never went away, so by then it was time to send it in.

Camera is back. No vertical line in sight.
Still wondering why it happened.
I am sure an explanation will come soon.

so,
did you find any explanation yet?
How long does it takes (more or less) to send camera, fix and get back?
Any news about build 20?

A component on the board was bad. Further explanation will come. I seems to be a very rare problem. In and out took a little bit more than two weeks. I have not tried build 20, I don't use beta builds.

I've had this issue with RED # 1888 and now with RED # 6353. The camera had been on for about 45 minutes on Build 20.1.3. Will do the black calibration thing but I sure hope this doesn't keep coming back. At least the first CF card had no issues... it was after I changed over to the second card that this occurred.

Andreae. It seems as the line is NOT due to where the footage stored. The problem is inside the camera (at least my line was produced internally).
Nice picture.

Thanks! You are right. looking at the first 8GB card again... I noticed 2 of the last clips had the vertical lines. I've done the black calibration and its gone... I'm just wondering if RED has a recommendation of how to avoid this all together. Guess I will set the fan to "hot" for now.

I think a major cause of this vertical line is the labeling of the "auto" fan feature. When people think automatic they think the camera adjusts the fan speed as needed depending on the temperature. This is not true when the camera is recording... the fan speed will always be at the minimal speed under the auto setting while recording. In a state like Florida that will quickly lead to problems. This should just be highlighted more in the manual or at least with a little operating temperature guide paper that ships with the camera.

I got this same problem wit my R1 body. From 4 weeks is still in a REL service (they actually not shure for the reason). So I wonder how many Red Users got lines problem...

I had 2 lines about 1/6th of the way through the top right 16:9 frame today. I could see it Live but more noticably during playback of the shots against green screen.
I was using build 21.1.2 at ILM/Kerner Optical for some MOCO sequences and thankfully the lines never crossed the actors.
After discovering the lines moments before rolling ( camera was on AC power and lines didn't show up till 4hours after call when we rolled the first shot. I had to wait till we rolled our first shots before pulling the red-drive and downloading because of a anxious client. I black balanced then it appeared again an hour later!
Lots of fun with Red:)
