View Full Version : What's Red Made Of?

Elijah Kelley

I hope to have my camera, lenses and accessories at the end of 2007 and have many colleagues who will want to borrow/rent my camera. So, that being said I just wanted to know on a pound for pound against a zeis or cooke lens how will the Red lenses stand up as far as wear and tear in a rental atmosphere. What's the housing made of on the lenses? Don't remember reading what alloy or composite the body of the lens is made of. Are answers out there in the forum or can someone offer up some specs?

It's made from the blood, sweat and tears of the most crazy devoted sons 'o' #@!$#!% this side of the universe.
Camera body is aluminum (thanks guys), not magnesium alloy as I had previously suggested.
Not sure about lens casing

Think the body is aluminum now.

Camera body is aluminum, but I think he's asking about the lenses.

Oh...... In that case they're made out of glass (you hope)!

But seriously, so long as the internals are made of what ever combo of materials that assure a long wear life and precision fit and finish, I really don't see a problem with the outer shells being made from polycarbonate or some other high molecular weight plastic. If all they are doing is serving as a skin for the guts that would be fine in my book.
The gear rings on the other hand should be made of metal.

Aluminium offers good heat dissipation though. The body of the camera can act as one big surround heat-sink.

Gibby's studiodaily article gives a little insight into the build quality of the
18-50mm lens. Doesn't mention what it's made of, but a nice hands on report:

Hi Acehole,

Yep aluminum is the classic heat sink material. I was talking about the lenses as adaml pointed out that was the original question.lol

It's made of Unobtainite, which is the metallic allotrope of Unobtainium. Unobtainite has the remarkable property of Negative Inventory Rating (NIR) which basically means its per-pound cost is negative.

Approximately 6 pounds of Unobtainite are used to make the Red housing, which it costs about -$20,000 per pound, which is the real explanation for how they can sell a $100,000 camera for under $20,000.

Well, so Sony tell me:w00t:

So, in the exact moment I dont pay the camera, I should have 17.500 .- appear in my account, right?

Those Coke bottles are important as the bottoms serve as oculars for the EVF.

Right, and also the lenses. The length of the zoom depends on the size of the bottle.:sorcerer:

aaargh, it's called aluminium!
Whatever, would be fun if it was made out of unobtainium though :)
It just dawned on me, how about a Vibranium Stabilizer? (sorry Cpt. America)

That's exactly what I was going to say, sugar and spice and everything nice, lol. Well done. ;)

Theoretically, yes. But now explain how you are going to get a camera without paying for it!

Jochen Schmidt-Hambrock
07-12-2007, 05:15 AM
I cant, because a positive payment for a negative camera would get me nothing.

At least the negative camera should give you higher resolution and less grain!!:w00t:

A higher resolution on a negativ camera would not be desirable. Same with more negative grain.

Somebody stop me please.

I once recorded a voodoo ceremony in Benin,West Africa for a documentary. In order to get the gods goodwill a goat was sacrified. That goatīs spirit was supposed to be transfered into my DAT recorder (true story, no kidding. Its included in the Making Of, DVD commercially available).

I still have the machine.

Feeding it some hay from time to time....
