Hi,

I've tried searching but have been unable to get any accurate figures on camera and add-on component weights.

One of the uses I will be putting my rig to is very critical in this regard.

Have any weights been published yet?

If not, now the engineering is all complete, would it be possible for Red to post these figures in advance of any purchasing decisions.

Any information would be very useful.

Thanks

Geoff

The last we heard from the RED Team the basic body had been "pumped up" from 7 to 8 pounds to make it sturdier. Post-NAB and the Kiwi expedition they also went back to the drawing board on the cage and rail designs, in particular they became disenchanted with some of the properties of carbon fiber for rods.

What's the weight of the minimum set-up?

Can the battery and RedDrive be detached and run off tethers when every ounce counts?

How close are we to a physical characteristics spec sheet?

The tech spec page on red.com now says 9lb. Don't know how up to date that is, as the same page also lists 1080i as an acquisition format, and 160GB max for the RED-DRIVE – both of which are long out of date.

I am also trying to work out an ultra light weight setup for a specific job. Do people think it would be possible to come in under 10lb for body (no EVF or LCD), Canon/Nikon prime, CF recording, and battery (not a Red Brick as that would be too heavy, but some alternative smaller 12v Lithium Polymer battery that could run the camera for a short time).

Thoughts anyone?

The battery would be your main problem there Nick. The lens would be about 1 pound or so and I think you would have a hard time finding a battery that only weighs 1 pound with enough juice. The CF card would not really factor in but I assume the camera is the 8-9 pounds talked about with just a smart side cover and not with an optional flash port module so that would add some weight. My first thoughts would be that you could not get under 10lbs with the set up you mention.

The exact weight is anyone's guess right now, but if you think in the 9lbs range, I bet you won't be far off. Maybe we'll weigh it at the LART testing...

Surely the design is in a late enough stage to issue the proper weight? (I thought it might be down to software/firmware tweaks about now)

Hold on a minute I take that back. RED are unusual because they are consulting camera-ops on a large scale through this forum instead of consulting just a privileged few. This company is doing something too many of us are not used to which is being kept informed during a product's development stages, so of course this means the specifications are all provisional at the moment...

This might lead to a few protracted forum arguments/discussions as to what we as users would like as features on the camera but this also gives the company the chance to develop a product, or products, that is more likely to get closer to meeting our requirements.

I applaud their efforts!

(Cough) Though I would like to know dimensions and weights as soon as they become firm (of the body only since there will be so many different configs).

Dimensions are now shown on http://www.red.com/techspecs.shtml

Still want to know if the battery and RedDrive can run to the body/lens via cables. I assume that eSATA can handle a short run and 4 pin XLR can carry the 12v. Dealing with the tethers might be the right trade off if the weight of the battery & drive made the difference in a specific set-up.

Yes. We even have a belt clip for the battery.

Cool, I already have an indentation there from the Firestore  .
