Setting White Balance on Red One

New to Red One. As you folks know there is a white balannce button on the red one (#2 button i believe).

When I press it this changes the white balance. My question is:

Does the camera have to be pointing directly at a ALL white surface, or can it just be pointing at the scene, then hit the #2 button?

All white surface. And the more the surface fills the frame, the better.

Also make sure that the white card is reflecting the light that you want to balance to. Won't do any good if you're balancing to your off-colour fill. :)
