I think it's fantastic what RED is doing and I am wondering if RED has any plans to set up service centers or some type of certified RED specialist program so that servicing the camera if ever needed does not involve sending it back to RED HQ.

Personally, I've had experience sending a Canon Mini DV (their first digital video camera model, I think) to a contractor to try and correct a flaw in a "refurbished to original specs" camera. The flaw was an arrowhead shaped group of dark pixels in the center of the image. I sent it back twice, and the second time sent it with a video clearly showing the flaw. Called Canon direct and they just said they did not replace cameras and to send it back to the contractors a third time. Didn't do that.
That's why I think it is better to send it to those who made it for any repairs, upgrades, etc.

I agree, had the same problem with an early Canon XL1 and got the same thing. I finally sent it back to the Canon center in CA before it got fixed. Sending back to HQ is fine with me, that is if we ever had to send it back.

I've always assumed that something like this will go into place. I'd be willing to bet that some modifications/repairs will be changes that can be done by a generic user, while some will require some level of certification or extra knowledge [say... a rental house] and some will be in-house [RED] only.
I suppose time will tell on that front.
