View Full Version : Students denied entrance to Red booth @NAB

I am a college prof and have been attending NAB since 1977. Since 1987 I have had students working at the show for various vendors (mostly Sony) and the NAB itself (this year for the Digital Cinema Summit); 28 students total for 2007. A peculiar thing happened to six or seven of these students who waited in line at the Red booth -- when they got to the head of the line they were told that because they had Sony name badges, they could not enter. What is the story behind that?
As you can imagine, the students were decidedly unhappy to have wasted so much time in line, and they were not too happy with me either since I had included Red on their "must see" assignment list. Fortunately, the rest of the students were warned before they wasted their time as well.
Not exactly a smooth PR move on Red's part. Even if they were "real" Sony employees, the last day of the show is always when vendor employees visit other vendors' booths. Our students certainly were not treated like that anywhere else.

Thanks. The cinematography.com link was informative. Must have been quite an "incident" -- either that or the Red folks are awfully touch.

Piece by piece the story slowly comes together.
Too bad a few spoiled it for your students though.

It's unfortunate that your students were denied access, but if you knew that it was because of their Sony badges... what's with the thread title?

That is really unfortunate. It seems like a few rotten apples spoil the rest and partly miscommunication. Seeing 4k projection in itself would have been educational. The Red team has certainly been pretty open. Last last year (when they had the mini-tent), I had a Sony badge and I had no problems. They were letting Sony spies-employees in (not that I was spying for Sony- honest!). Sorry to hear about what happened.

im more interested in hearing about the sony guys and what they did exactly!!
Brook maybe you can confirm this.. but at the cinegear screening, do you think that one guy, who was complaing about colors or something, was a sony guy? Im not sure if you will remember who im talkn about, but I got the impression (by his attitude) that he might have been sony

From everything I read it seemed like quite a small incident that has subsequently been blown out of proportion. I'm a little suprised it's being brought up again so long after NAB.
As a college professor a better line of enquiry might be to give Red a call and talk directly to them rather than discussing the issue in an open forum. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to help you out, just as they have most others that have been in communication with them.
One of the problems with these kinds of threads is that there are many people who simply like to goad members of reduser into protecting red in order to propagate the whole fanboyism and point and laugh in other forums, it's sad I know but has nonetheless happens from time to time.

I personally welcomed and escorted in top executives from Panasonic, Panavision, Arri and Sony into our theater to watch "Crossing the Line", including the designer of the Genesis. All were very respectful. On the last day of the show we had a group from Sony that were making a scene and being disruptive in our booth. The call was then made to exclude Sony employees from the booth (it is NOT a requirement to let them in, BTW). We continued to allow all other competitors access to our booth until the end of the show.

Seems to me the forum worked just like it should. I asked a question in a group where someone was likely to have at least a partial answer, and surprise....someone did. Not sure what the "goading" and "fanboyism" is about, but on the occasions when I check this forum, I have always found useful info. Having been involved the development of HD since 1983 or so, I particularly appreciate the technical info, demos, tests, and so on found here. A little enthusiasm is to be expected from folks who very much want their cameras.

Blade I think most of the prickly necks are just a result of the tone of some previous threads regarding this subject. Most were trolls attempting to bait and goad a response and/or accuse RED of deceptive and childish behavior.

My apologies if you thinking I'm having a go, it's not my intention, I'm merely stating a point. If one of your students had a problem with something you taught in your class would you rather they shouted out to the entire campus and have you explain it infront of everyone or simply discuss the matter with you directly.
As someone who reads cinematography.com I'm sure you must have come across the fanboy comments, and from time to time on this forum there have been such posts as to goad members into arguments. I'm merely saying this type of thread is verging on that, perhaps I didn't put that as succinctly as I might have.
I agree that there is some great info to be found here on the forum and am merely trying to maintain that.

Ya cause everyone has seen the fans at a British soccer match and we all know how kind, rational and tame all you Brit's are.

Evin and I were standing around [both reading the thread on our iPhones... we're dorks] and thought the same thing. We both got called back to set before we had the chance to lock her down.
It's unfortunate that your students were kept out of the booth, but the reason has been explained. Accordingly... there's not much left to say.
