http://www.r3ddata.com/logo.pngMac Announcement:
R3D Data Manager for Mac version 5.0 is released!

This version is for Mac OS 10.5 ONLY. Due to some needed changes in the structure, we can no longer support Mac OS 10.4

You will need a new key before using this version. We will be emailing all valid users a key, so check your email before upgrading. You can always obtain your key at https://www.r3ddata.com/order/resend/

Please see the Other upgrade notes section at the bottom of this update for older, yet still relevant, upgrade notes

**********************************

Updates in this release:

There are so many upgrades in this release, Im not sure we remember them all. Heres the big ones:

R3D File Recovery This is a handy feature that goes beyond REDundead. This utility allows you to select from all your available media, mounted or not, and then finds the R3D files on that media. As it finds R3D files, it will list the files in a table, along with info about those files. It will then organize them by shot date, re-create the folder structure (RDM/RDC), and re-create the reference movies associated with the R3D files. This makes it much easier to find the files you are looking for. It will also let you print out a log to text, CSV or PDF formats.

Separate Location for Checksums You can now assign a separate location to store the checksums R3D Data Manager generates separate from your Red Media. Using this method, the program will not write to the source media. It will still write those checksums to each destination.

Quicktime Render Multiple Clips We now have a queue pipeline for our Quicktime Render. This allows you to render multiple clips at once, using all available processors. Just select the number of processors you wish to use.

Email/SMS Notifications If you have an active internet connection, R3D Data Manager can send you an email or SMS text message when it completes any operation - file copy, quicktime render or R3D recovery. Now you can walk away knowing R3D Data Manager will let you know when its done.

On-Screen Notification In addition to notifying you via email/sms, R3D Data Manager will also notify you by bouncing the icon in the dock. So if you are at your computer working on something else, you can see when R3D Data Manager is done.

Icon Shows State In addition to bouncing, the dock icon will change to indicate whatever state the copy processes ended. Green check for all clear, yellow check for warn, and red X for bad.

DPX decoding We have added DPX decoding to the Quicktime Render. You can now output directly to DPX for further processing.

Auto-start Copies on Red Media Mount Now if you mount a Red Media and have at least one destination setup, it will auto-start the copy process. You dont even need one click!

Red Media Formatting R3D Data Manager will now format Red Media for use directly in the camera. You must have formatted the media in camera at least once for your specific camera build. R3D Data Manager will only format identified Red Media, allowing you to select it from a pull down menu, then set the camera letter and roll number. Click format, and R3D Data Manager will take care of the rest, including auto-unmounting the media.

ETA Copy Process R3D Data Manager will now give an ETA for each copy process. It will show the ETA per destination, so you can see how long each will take.

ETA Quicktime Rendering Similar to the copy ETA, R3D Data Manager will give an ETA for the entire render processing.

Added 1/4 4k Output Resolutions We added 2k (1/4 4k) output resolutions to the Quicktime Render. 1/4 4k 2:1 and 1/4 4k 16:9 supported.

Triple check destinations We have had a couple of cases where the user would setup a destination and then start a copy process, but the destination disappeared. In the past R3D Data Manager would have created a directory in "/Volumes/" and put the data there. Now we triple check that the destination in "/Volumes/" exists just before we start writing to it.

Quicktime Render Now Writes to Activity Log The Quicktime Render now writes to the Activity Log window, so you can see progress there.

Activity Log Auto-Scroll The Activity Log window will now auto-scroll as new updates are posted.

Activity Log and Result Log are Saveable You can now save the Activity Log or Results Log as a text file. The Activity Log is saveable via a menu item, and the Results Log is saveable via the button on its window.

Additional Detail to Activity Log R3D Data Manager now records additional detail to the Activity Log window, helping you to diagnose issues.

Unmounting More Reliable We have now made the unmounting features more reliable by using a different technique.

Removed _001 from Rendered Quicktimes Due to a bug, previous versions were rendering Quicktimes with a suffixed _001.

Render Cores/Processor UI More Specific We changed the UI on the Quicktime Render window to be more specific about processor and core usage.

Project Info now a Sheet We moved the Project Information for Red Media to a sheet, allowing better use of space. The main window still displays project info data, but now it is easier to update that data.

Quicktime UI Smaller We made the Quicktime Render window smaller, allowing those with smaller screens to see all the options.

Quickhelp Points to Items The quick help buttons have been relabeled to "step by step" and now point exactly to the area or buttons you are supposed to work with, giving precise directions. The step by step points our recommended order for setting up your workflow.

As Im sure you'll agree, thats a lot of updates! Most of these updates came from suggestions directly from he users. If you have any recommendations, please dont be afraid to share them. We want to make our product more valuable and usable for those in the trenches!

**********************************

Other Upgrade notes:

IF UPGRADING FROM 4.1 or earlier: Because we slightly changed the name of the executable, DO NOT auto-update the program. Instead, download the package, delete the "R3DManager" from your applications, double click on the DMG file you downloaded to mount it, and copy the "R3D Data Manager" from the DMG image to your Applications folder. Then re-link it to your dock. As of version 4.2, this is not an issue. So from version 4.2 onwards you can use the auto-update supplied in the program.

http://www.r3ddata.com/logo.pngWindows Announcement:
R3D Data Manager for Windows version 1.0 has a due date!

Thats right - the long awaited windows version will finally be released. We are in the midst of final testing now and hope to release version 1.0 on July 23, 2009 (estimated).

The 1.0 version of windows will essentially be the same as the 2.4 version of Mac, with upgrades. It will have the following:

Able to copy from hundreds of sources to hundreds of destinations.
Use MD5, SHA1 or SHA256 checksums
Special copy options if RDC folder already exists
Check each destination's checksums
Erase files off Red Media when all destinations match
Report on R3D errors only
Always saves master checksums to alternate location when generateing from Red Media - it never writes to a Red Media
Special option for copying digital.*.profile files

We hope to have the following also included:

SMS/Email on completion
Additional suprises

The one HUGE improvement over everything else is: during our testing we found that NO copy operation in the windows SDK is good enough. So we wrote our own. With this, we re-wrote how items will be copied. In short, items will be read ONCE from any media, and copied to each destination. So as long as your slowest destination is equal to or faster than the Red Media, you should be able to copy at line speed regardless of how many destinations you copy to. We will be porting this to the Mac version soon.

If July 23rd sounds familiar to anyone - it should. We will be showing our wares at REDucation's Community Day. Ill personally be there to show anyone the ins and outs of the system, and how it will help give you piece of mind that your valuable footage is safe. Come stop by booth #20 and see it in action, from camera to post.

Pricing Announcement:
Prices are about to change

With the release of the windows version, the pre-order sale price of it will stop on July 25, 2009. The price will go up to its normal price of $79. In addition, the combo price will increase to its normal price of $149.

In addition to that, we will be ending the free upgrades for life promotion on August 1, 2009. All purchases after 12:01 PST that day will not have the free upgrades. Regular version upgrades and bug fixes will be rolled out on a continual basis, but upgrading to Mac version 6.x or Windows version 2.x will require an additional fee (to be determined, but roughly 20% of normal price).

For some reason when I attempt to try the R3D file recovery it just searches the volumes but never finds them. Is this a bug possibly?

How safe is formatting RED Media through the new version of R3D Data Manager. I know it's a feature people have wanted forever but also something RED has continuously warned us about.

Hey Conrad, Glad to see the update is here. I've not yet downloaded it, but everything I've read so far sounds great. I've only got one question, formatting the RED media on the computer sounds very questionable, not even RED does that. Have they tested this new feature? I think it sounds great, I just don't want to take any chance of introducing a possible hiccup into the "flow."

Just posted and saw that Sam had the same question, glad I'm not the only one.

On our systems it does take a minute to find them. Its using standard system calls, so unless you dont have any rdisks, I dont see why it wouldnt find them all.

I did approach Red with this feature. Ill let Deanan & company respond from there.

We did do extensive testing on this particular feature. The code has been written mostly unchanged since January. We have tested it on every type of Red Media, and a variety of camera bodies. I personally use it on all the "real world" Red shoots I do.

Please read the quick help in the software for more details.

This feature alone is priceless. The ability to format cards before sending them back solves a lot of potential problems.

Hey guys, I thought I should post here a couple of gotchas about the formatting. They are explained in detail in the user manual, the quick help, and in the actual utility.

- You must have formatted the Red Media in camera using the current software build of the camera. Formatting a card in camera with build 16, formatting it using our tool, then using it on a build 17 camera is not advised. The best idea is to format them in camera at prep, or in camera at the beginning of the shoot to ensure the build matches.

- The potential for mislabeled footage exists. For example, you have 2 cameras and have assigned them A and B. You have a Red Media, and using the tool you assign it to camera A roll 023. You should then use it only on camera A. You can record fine using it on camera B, but the footage will be in this file structure:

A023_0711AD/A023_0711AD.RDM/B0023_C001_0711AD.RDC/B023_C001_0711AD.R3D

Notice how the A camera is labeled in the RDM folder, but the B camera is labeled in the RDC folder and R3D file. The camera overrides the Red Media setting (as it should). ***Please note this is no different than if you pre-formatted the Red Media in camera and then switched cameras. The same thing would happen.***

Hi,
I have tried R3D Recovery twice and it does not appear to work. It says it is searching for files, but nothing is ever retrieved. I have left it running for 5 hours yesterday, and an hour today. Comparably redundead retrieved 109 files from the same erased drive. Any ideas?

Thanks for the great new look to the software and the new icon is much easier to spot in the doc.

So t is recovering the files, I can see them on the drive I am retrieving to. There is just no list in the software window indicating that anything has been retrieved.
